Show LEAVES CRUSADE IN HANDS OF AGENTS PORTLAND,' Or., Sept. 6. Governor Oswald West will close his Portland office and return to Salem, the capital, having placed his anti-vice campaign iu the hands of authorized agents ot tho state. These agents, the governor said tonight, would proceed with the moral purification of this city. Thoy are H. M. Esterly, special prosecutor, and Eoscoe P. Hurst, appointed to compel enforcement of the liquor laws. Members of the municipal vice commission, com-mission, appointed by tho mayor under an ordiuanco passed by the city council coun-cil to investigate alleged immorality iu hotels and rooming houses, refused today to-day to give cither mayor or council the iuformation upon which it based its recent re-cent report. This report, which afforded the basis for tho governor's crusade, presented in a general way a deplorable condition with respect to a majority of the hos- telries. The commissioners said they would bo violating confidences if thc'ir information infor-mation was made public. |
