Show I WILSON TO VISIT THE MIDDLE WEST By International News Service, SEAGIRT. X. J., Sept. 6. Governor Wilson today made plana for his first western trip In tho week of September Ifi. He declared at the ynino time, however, how-ever, that his trip will not Interfere with his purpose of taking the Etiimp In the primary fight for United States senator ' from New Jersey. The primaries are to be held Sdptenibcr 2i. The governor will have three open dates to dovote to this contest, Friday and Saturday of next week and the Monday preceding the primary pri-mary election. "Will you find time to speak In the senatorial fight?"' he was asked. "Yes," was tho reply. "I shall lind time for that." i "Von will have only three days In which to speak." "That Is enough," said the " governor decisively. Hopeful of Maine. Former Judge John W. Westcoll. who is one of tho three Progressive candidates entered against former Senator James Smith, was with tho governor this nflor-noou. nflor-noou. Judge Wcstcott has Just returned from a 'stumping tour of Maine and told the governor that he was very hopeful of the result there. When Judge Wcstcott Wcst-cott left the governor he said: "Governor Wilson will not Interfere In favor of any ono of tho throe men who are out to beat James Smith. I do not propose to withdraw from tho race in favor of either Representative Ilugheu or Senator Gcbhardt. The governor will be glad to nee uny one of them elected. I shall start my campaign on Monday and shall make a complete canvass of the state." Wilson's Western Trip. The dates for tho western trip announced an-nounced by Governor Wilson arc: September 1", Sioux City. Ia.; September Septem-ber IS, Minneapolis and St. Paul; September Septem-ber 19, Milwaukee: September 20. Columbus; Colum-bus; September 21, Pittsburg. The Sioux City date Is a fair, the others are political politi-cal meetings. These dates were arrangned by the campaign committee in New York, who did not know of a previous engagement made by Governor Wilson himself through A. Mitchell Palmer for Scranton September Septem-ber 19. On that day all tho Pennsylvania state candidates are to ho notified of their ' nominations. Tho date cannot, therefore, be moved ahead or back to suit the convenience con-venience of Governor Wilson. The matter mat-ter will have to be stralghtoned out by the campaign committee. Will Have Special Car. The govornor will travel in a special Pullman with his two secretaries and two stenographers. It will bo such a busy week for the governor that he will be unable to prepare any speeches In advance. ad-vance. The stenographers will be taken 1 alone bo that tho speeches can bo gotten out with the utmost dispatch. This will not bo the governor's only visit to Ohio. ITo expects to speak later on In Cleveland and perhaps In Cincinnati. Cincin-nati. There has been a good deal of talk in Seagirt recently about the possible nomination nom-ination of William G. McAdoo for govornor gov-ornor of New York. Justice .lames "VV. Gerard of New York was In conference with the governor this- afternoon and though tho Judge would not say what whs discussed, he Bald afterward, "I do not think wc could do anything better than nominate Mr. McAdoo." Will Confer With McOombs. The governor has an appointment on Monday to meet William F. McCombs, chairman of the committee, who Is recovering re-covering from the Illness that caused his temporary retirement from the management manage-ment of the national campaign, "I Intend hereafter to have a weekly conference with tho campaign committee," commit-tee," said tho governor. "The crtimpalffn has now reached tho stage where this Is necessary." Judge Gerard is very enthusiastic over Governor Wilson's prospects. "It will be pretty soft for the national Democratic ticket if tho campaign committee com-mittee will exercise what tho Judges call a reasonable dgree of care," he said. "Wilson and Marshall will carry New York state by not lens than SO.OOO plurality." |
