The belief in the hearts of his acquaintances ac-quaintances here that he has at various tinies lied to them I ascribe as a reason rea-son for an apathetic condition which will serve to rcfluce his majority next month. An Embarrassment. The Bonner fish hatchery, located some two and one-half miles from this place, has operated as an embarrassment to Brady to his political loss In this coun-tv. coun-tv. A man named Oliver from Shoshone county had been placed In charge of this hatchery, probably at the suggestion of Chairman O'Ncll, Oliver was said to be a faithful and an efficient sorvant of the people In the performance of this public trust. "Ills work was of pride to tho people here who appreciated the existence ex-istence of this stato Institution being located lo-cated In the baby county where fishing is such a profitable industry, as well as a pleasant, pastime. When the struggle came for a candidate candi-date for governor within the Republican partv. Oliver lined up with the O'Ncll forces. He was not offensively partisan, but ho was loyal to his former . friend, the slate chairman. At. the conclusion of this struggle Sir. Oliver was deposed and no one lias been chosen, to fill his place. The governor ascribes politics as the real reason for his removal ana frankly states, there will be no change-In the present situation until after election. elec-tion. . , Th's injures tho governor, because of a belief that ho is subordinating the assets as-sets of the state to political considerations. considera-tions. Local Option an Issue, The local option Issue is a factor In Bonner county politics and especially so In the gubernatorial election. On May 23 last this county voted, 'dry by a bare majority of 207. Out pf 4000 votes this 'was a very close result. "I voted for local option last spring." said an Influential In-fluential Republican here today, but if I had a chance to correct the situation today 1 would do so by voting against it, for in Sandpolnt there is such a flagrant disobedience of the law as to disgust dis-gust one with the attempt to drive pco-nlo pco-nlo to do what their inclinations tell them not to do." Then he said there wmo fourteen places In Sandppint where lltiuor could be easily procured, and this a town of scarce 5000 people. The deduction de-duction I make, on this situation Is that if Brady is to fall heir to the dry and Hawlcy to tho "wet" vote, this will serve as an additional reason for a material ma-terial reduction in Brady's majority of two years ago of 1121 votes over Alexander. Alex-ander. By Reduced Majority. I have conferred here with the best 1udKcs or the situation In Bonner coun-tv coun-tv and 1t is my Judgment that Mr. Brady will carrv Bonner county over Mr. Haw-lcv Haw-lcv on November 8 by about -100 votes. S. D. Tavlor Is the only candidate In Bonner county on either ticket for a state nnc(iin., Tt Is: the Rcnubllca'n nominee of his party for auditor. He will run ahead of his ticket, as will Burton L. French of Moscow, Republican candidate candi-date for congress, who is very popular This county is too far removed from Carey act lands to serve to bring home to the people any material effect of mismanagement mis-management of state land board affairs as an effective political equation of Importance Im-portance in the result of the fall elcc- li0U' Senatorial Candidates. Tim Democrats or Bonner county have nominated S. P. Donnelly, "the sago of Lake View." as their candidate for the bcnatc. and L. Lundccn. J. P. Dunlap and James FItzpatrick Tor the house. Two of these are listed as "wets" and two as The Republicans have nominated Dr. O F. P'igc as their candidate for tho senate, and for the house 13. D. Farmln, T. .1. Jones and It. M. Sanborn. Two of these ate regarded as "wets" and two a: "drys." Dr. Page, the Republican candidate, wan always recognized as n Democrat until his election. Ho run for coroner of old Kootenai county four years ago and served as a. member of the Democratic state central committee from Bonnor county two years ago, up to the 'time, the supreme court decided that the Democratic party was not a party. In the event of cither Republican Republi-can or ot Democratic success, half of either delegation will be for and the other half against the proposed constitutional constitu-tional amendment forecasting state-wldo prohibition. Tho fight between Donnelly and Pago for. the state senate will be close, with apparent odds in favor of the "sage of Lake View." Railroad Commission reeling. While there Is slight attention given in the Bonner county campaign to tho plank in the Republican platform favoring fa-voring a railroad commission, the spirit of the people here Is opposed to it. All of tho railroads in" Bonnor county are sublected to interstate regulation, so that a railroad commission could have slight Influence with conditions here of a remedial rem-edial nature; besides, there is no apparent appar-ent demand for any such remedy of service. serv-ice. As a merchant from Hope (In Bonner Bon-ner county) said to mo today: "We experience ex-perience no difficulty with the railroads. If anything Is unjust or unfair we aro able to cope with the situation ourselves our-selves by a candid presentation of our demands to tho railroads." Live Workers. 'Herman H. Taylor Is chairman of the Republican party of Bonner county, and Both are "live ones," and working ip duslriously and Ingeniously to bring a.bout the best possible showing for their county and state tickets on November S. Whllo both of these cordial gentlemen spoke freely and unreservedly of the present political condition in Bonner county, neither of them would submit a forecast of the probable outcome of the election. Both candidates for governor have made speeches In Bonner county. The Republicans will further campaign Bonner Bon-ner count v with French. Gooding. Borah and Heyburn. while the Democrats have itineraries yet to make for Bowcn, Nugent, Nu-gent, Moore and Karl Paine.? The Democrats arc without a paper in Bonner county. The Republicans have three the North Jdaho News and tlifl Pan d'Orrcllle Review of this place, and the Herald of Bonncrs . Ferry, Auditor Taylor's paper. This Is a signal . handicap handi-cap to the Democrats. In their pending campaign. In Awe of tho Southeast. The Republicans and Democrats allko arc standing in awe of the southeastern Idaho situation The, feeling that upon the "church vote" of the southeastern country depends tho result of the election, elec-tion, especially for governor, Is more firmly fastened on the hearts of. theso people than ever before. There arc five other northern Idaho counties which I shall proceed to visit, and this- article will be followed by one from each of these dealing with tho local lo-cal situation, as this article has dealt with' politics ' in Bonner county. Shoshone county will probably follow this. |
