Daniels Estimates Loss. In the rear of the basement portion of the Daniels store was a large store room, whore Max Daniels, owner of tho building, store and theater, had practically all of his summer stock of clothing "and furnishings storod. Mr. Daniels this morning estimated the contents con-tents of tho basement as boing worth about $40,000, with less than 10 per cent insurance. Much of tho stock in tho store rooms was consumed by the flames, while tho remainder of the basement base-ment stock wns badly damaged by smoke and water, The south annex, nscd for the ladies' furnishing department, escaped damage dam-age until iontf after tho fire hud been discovered. At about 2 o'clock flames broke through from the theater, 'but were quickly checked, not, however, bo-fore bo-fore considerable damage had been ia:ni(iorl The north store room, occupied by tho men's furnishing department suffered damage only from smoke and water. Max Daniels has been closing out his business, preparatory to devoting devot-ing his time entirely to his tailoring establishment on West Second South street, and his theatrical interests. Being dark for tho past two weeks, as the result of the transfer of the Allen Curtis Musical compauy to the Shu-bert Shu-bert theater, there was no elaborate costumes or Topcrty effects in thl theater at the time of the fire, other- wiso the damage might have been much heavier. At 11:30 o'clock Sunday night A. TT. "White, special watchman employed Jin tho vicinit, was in the basement j of the theater and saw no evidence of fire. Mr. Daniels visited the store early in the evening and passed again at 13 o'clock on his way homo from tho Garrick theater, where ho had spent the evening. Two hours later tho basement of the theater was a seething mass of flames. Tho Daniels building ia of tho fireproof fire-proof type of building, and was croct-c croct-c 1 two years ago bv Max Daniels at a cost of about $32,000. The building itself it-self is fully insured.
