The dress rehearsal of Kdmund Roslnnd's "Chanticleer" at the Porte St. Mnrtln theater tonight in the presence of a remarkable audience corn-other corn-other European capitals, was an artistic and dramatic world of Paris, as well as other Kuropean capltols. was an artistic success of the first magnitude, tho exquisite ex-quisite verse being up to die llncst traditions tradi-tions of - Rostand's poetic genius. The brilliancy of the llrst act which was pre-coded pre-coded by a charming prologue, delivered by Jean Coquelln. preparing the audience for the atmosphere of tho piece, fairly set the theater mad with enthusiasm. But the second and third acts, which were somewhat tedious., were less favorably received. re-ceived. In the last act, however, enthusiasm enthu-siasm was revived to the boiling point. There were live calls after the curtain fellu. but M. Rostnnd himself did not ap-feli. ap-feli. but Mr. Rostand himself did not np-Chantleleer. np-Chantleleer. stepped before the curtain and simply expressed his thanks. The piece was wonderfully staged and the plot thrilling. M. Gnltry. Mme. Slmonnc Le-Rargy. Le-Rargy. tho hen pheasant: Gallpeaux. the black bird, and Coquelln, the dog. carried off the honors. |
