Show American Club Presents Protest Pro-test to City Council Against Proposed Privilege. At tho monthly mooting of the "Woman's "Wo-man's American club, held at, the homo of Mrs. George. .Ross, S2;T Third avcuuo, Monday afternoon, a committee, con-sisling con-sisling of Mrs. J. J. Williams, Mrs. V. IT. Furthermore, tho women aro opposed to the granting of any franchise to the Saltan railroad of any character without with-out remuneration to I lie city. Would Congest Traffic. The members of tho club take the stand that tho granting of tho franchiso would block traflic. during tho summer seasons, in that the company would not be able to run enough trains lo accommodate accom-modate the public and at the same l.imo keep tho si reels clear for tho regular street car traflic. Owing to 1 he high price of living, tho club appointed a. committee, consisting of Mrs. George Jfoss, Mrs. M. F. Bur-moistcr. Bur-moistcr. Mrs. F. M. Wheeling and Mrs. M. F. Parker, to draw up a petition to be presented to the city council, asking that the peddlers' license of $50 a yenr bo repealed. Owing to tho license, it is not. possible for street vendors and peddlers io offer foodstuffs for sale lo any largo dogroo and the women aro in hopes that the repealing of the license ordinance would havo the effect of in creasing competit ion between street vendors ven-dors and the ordinary dealers and thereby there-by reduce the price of the necessaries of life. Attendance Is Large. The mooting Monday afternoon was very largely attondod, ninny strangers being present. A pleasing musical and literary programme was rendered, including in-cluding musical numbers by Mrs. Town-send Town-send and the Misses Duval) and Lovo; a recitation by Mrs. W. II. Woodruff and a reading 1)3 Mrs. .T. J. Williams. During the mooting a letter from Mrs. E. G. Kidder, formerly secretary of tlio club, who now resides in Mason City, Nov,, was read. t was announced, also, that tickets for tho annual lovo feast of tho American club are now ready for distribution. Mrs. Ifoss's homo was beaufifullv decorated dec-orated for tho mooting with flags "of all nations. |
