Hayes, pastor of the Third Presbyterian church, preached an able sermon to a large congregation Sunday ovenlng on "Lessons from ICvents of the 1'ast Year." Taking for his text Numbers sxlil. 23. "What hath God wrought'.'" the llcv. Mr. Mayes declared that the world Is better than It was a year ago that morality and Christianity are spreading. In part he said "The text Is not a question: it Is an exclamation. Wonderful things had come to pass, things great, things strange and things numerous." he said. "The same is true of the past year that was true of that ancient year, rurthcrmorc, the events of a given year arc connected lu a logical oiiler. and where there is ji connection there is a connector. In other words, there Is a God In history. "It is wonderful that in spite of all tho selfishness and wickedness prevailing, prevail-ing, the world makes steady progress upward. up-ward. This Is a suroiproof of a God over us. I "It is hard to understand tho full meaning mean-ing of events so soon after their occurrence, occur-rence, but It Is wise to gather what we an from them before they pass from our notice. The world Is better governed than a year ago. Great changes for the better have been wrought in Turkey and Persia. Per-sia. Other nations arc feeling a new responsibility. re-sponsibility.
