Show CONNOR MEMORIAXi BANQUET. On Thursday evening, Mnreh lth, under the auspices of tho American club, a magnificent memorial for liberty will be inaugurated. It is designed, in connection with the banquet and the patriotic speaking which will be in cvi-douco, cvi-douco, to begin a movement which will plant hern a proper memorial of that gallant and glorious patriot and leader, General Patrick Edward Connor. A memorial to him is over due. His illustrious services hero deserve the best that can be provided. Ho was the man on tho spot, when the man was needed. Ho was firm, just, effective. He punished tho blood-thirsty Indian, and repressed by the fear of his power the turbulent among tho Saints, sonic of whom were disposed to taek.too serious!) tho treasonable utterances in tho tabernacle taber-nacle during t lie War of tho Rebellion. They feared to commit tho overt, act of treason, lest the vengeance of tho Nation Na-tion bo visited UDon them .by moans of tho heavy hand of General Connor. On his coming, tho spouting of treason was disguised or repressed. The hostile Indians were made "good." Tho magnificent military post of Fort Douglas, a center of loyalty and refuge for tho victims of disloyal hate, was established by him. His work was splendid, and its beneficial results continue con-tinue to this day. Though of foreign birth, he was in fact and in deod, the first, and he continues to be the great, Utah American. To do him honor is an honor to tlioso who so do; and we can all join with grateful hearts on tho date named, in awarding him tho acclaim that is his due, and in sotting on foot a move that will bo his permanent perma-nent memorial. |
