| Show COAL MINE an assay lade by ir ce 8 GOAL indications from ash and cinder form the cannel of bonneville booneville Boo neville from a report of analysis of samples of coal from the anthracite coal mine in slate canyon east of this cita made bv mr chaa D moore of alie U X C office in this city the following notes are taken the sample under consideration presented a notable absence of water it presents characteristics anite unlike the coals of utah mines and while it approaches pro aches a cannel coal in its fracture suggests an anthracite it refuses to yield any matters inglam able at low temperature or matter burning with a lum irons flame heated to a redness of or degrees it gives off from 20 to 25 of passes which when lighted burns with the pale bluish flame characteristic of the anthracite coal viewed against white paper in the div and away from the sun light this clune is invisible except as the flame of nearly absolute alcohol is visible viewed against a blace ground it resembles the flame ol 01 U U burning in the air to C 0 2 from this fact the sample considered is quite distinct from utah ceals and is probably a coal which can be raised to an heat yielding no coke it shows no disposition to form r prolonged heating to COO degrees 0 which completely disintegrates ath coals has no effect of destroy ing the solidity of alic coal cinder S at at a more intense heat in the neighborhood of 1000 C it forms a dust like agh of the purest type v lien the ignition is prolonged the indications from the aaa and cinder form resembles the coal of boneville mo but the fixedness of the carbon and the cliar acter of the flame suggest anthracite it gives results as follows water none sulphur trace volatile matter ad fixed carbon 70 ash 10 JOO probable total carbon available for heating 17 20 of broes weight anything like a linal to answer the question 0 values etc would require much time and an abundance of material it is worthy of consideration that the emoke from bituminous coal forms an item oi loss which donld render coal like sample of great value these figures may be slightly changed by more extended study but they are substantially correct mr jos A harris one of the proprietors prie tors of the above mentioned mine that therein of coal lowed into the mountain some sixty feet and they are only four or five feet belowske below she surface the vein has in creased from twelve inches in thickness to eighteen and how far down it boea is not known proprietors tors are confident that they have a good thing and will work the claim as soon as practicable its location is only about five miles from provo |
