Show COLLEGE PROFESSOR GOVERNMENT SLEUTH Educator of Cornell Back of More Against Illegal Traffic in Women. SEATTLE, Wash., Nov. 21. Behind the recent round-up of alleged importers of Japanese girls into tho United States for illegal purposes which led to the arrest by government officers of Captain Cap-tain T. R. Gawley, three Japanese mou and ono Japaneso woman, is said to be Prof. Jeremiah Jeuks, head of tho department de-partment of political and social economy in Cornell university, member of the United States immigration commission and for the last year acting as a government gov-ernment sleuth. In addition to those arrests, seventeen other persons have boon taken into custody by tbo local immigration im-migration officers on the same charge since October 2l. The operations of ihc immigration commission, which was appointed by congress to investigate immigration at home and abroad have been conducted with the greatest secrecy throughout the country. When tho commission do-scended do-scended upon Scattlo a conference was held with United States District Attorney At-torney Elmer E. Todd and all other government gov-ernment officials were cut out. The same methods wero adopted here as in New York. Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco and other cities and along the Mexican border where the investigations in-vestigations have boon conducted, wholesale arrests made and. a uumber of govorument officials dismissed. |
