Show HON 11 rhe last lous sleep of bouc deeply beloved on account of the news of the death of judda emerson reaching us us we went to press tuesday we were unable to give any of the particulars prom the ogden standard of wednesday we learn that ha died tuesday morning at at his residence in ogden city after suffering for some time past from heart troubles philip EL emirson was bom about the year 1834 in virginia his early training embraced a common school education until he became sufficiently advanced t anter upon the duties of a school tei cher after being engaged in that occupation for some time he began studying law and was admitted to the bar aud commenced his practice in the town of wallington vermont just before tho civil war mr emerson moved to battle creek michigan where he opened a law office and continued his practice his superior legal talent attracted admiring attention and he was soon elected city attorney of battle greek he was afterward elected as an as to the michigan legisla luro in which capacity ho served until sent to the state senate while in the he was elected president pro tern of that body strying as lieutenant governor and afterwards as acting governor in 1873 air emerson was appointed associate justice of the supreme court of utah by president gamt and in 1877 was re appointed b president hayes and by president garfield in isal he continued anthe bench until the first day of april 1885 when he retired he soon afterwards opened a law office in ogdon his ability in this capacity up to the time of his death was known by al to be auch as to merit respect and admiration for many yeara judge emerson has been connected with the masonic fraternity and at the time of his death was in high standing he has been minister of the lodge at provo and from 1880 until 1883 was master of utah mr emerson also officiated for tho first three years after the organization of the chapter at ogden as high priest and from the time of the organization of the in og jen ho held the office of eminent commander of the knights templar the judge was twice married by bis liisi marriage he had tareo children two of whom aro now living his ither having recently died by the bereaved widow ho had two children tho survive him the life of judge emerson has been an exceedingly active ono all utah humbly bows with re at abo departure of one 0 o bear to all and sincere sympathy without measure goes forth to the oar family with the invocation that strength may be given the at dietel dieted ones to enable them to bear the ad blow which has befallen them and which has deprived them of the kind care and great love of a husband and father |
