Show ill HEMPEL DIES AS BESOITIIF III Special Police Officer Succumbs After Brave Fight for His Life. J. S. N. Hompel, special police officer, of-ficer, and brother of Lieutenant John Ilempol of tho local polico, died last night at 11:35 o'clock at St. Mark's hospital from a gunshot wound received Tuesday forenoon in the Eagle Gate saloon, on Commercial street, while "fooling" over a rcvolvor with James Eilcy, bartender of fhe saloon. The shot, which was from a .3S caliber cali-ber revolver, entered the right breast, passing through the lung, liver and one largo intestine and lodged in the spinal column. Aft or the shooting. Ilcinpel was removed to the omergcucy hospital in the city jnil, where tho wound was dressed. lie was- then taken to St. Mark's hospital! Eiley and several others iu tho saloon at the time were arrested, but, upon request of Ilonipel, wero released, as he staled it was no more their fault than his, that he was shot. J. S. N. Hompel, better known as "Jako," was born in Denmark and was 32 years old. He is survived by a mother iu Denmark, a wife and three children in Almy, Wyo., who have been notified of tho death; three brothers, Lioutenant John Ilempol of this city, one brother in Now York City, and one in Portland, Me. The body has boon given into tho charge of Undertaker O'Donnell. The request made by Mr. Ilempol on his deathbed that Kiloy bo not prosecuted prose-cuted for the shooting will be granted. |
