Taylor has been hiring new managers for his Boston club ho will soon bo able to make up a team of ex-managers, for in two years ho has had seven leaders. Jimnvy Collins quit in disgust. Chick Stahl took the reins under protest and committed suicide for unknown reasons on the southern trip. Cy Young acted as manager for a while, "but refused to continue. Then Gcorgo Huff of Illinois university was signed. Ho stayed for breakfast and beat it back to his western west-ern school. Bob Unglaub succeeded him. and he, too, had a row with tho Boston owner. Then Jim McGuiro was obtained. . McGuire took a club that was tho rankest failure in the league and mndo it one of the best. .On paper his team shows no strcngthj and vet ho had them hustling and trying all tho time,, so that they were tho most feared plavcrs in tho league. Every one picked them as pennant contenders for next year under un-der McGuire. Everywhere "the old catcher was hailed as a. great and good bast ball manager. Then one of the typical slumps that come to all ball clubs hit tho team. John L Taylor got busy again and a bitter row followed. Taylor at least allowed McGuiro to "resign." Now Fred Lake is running the club. Lake may finish the season, but it 's even betting thero will be more trouble. Lake has acted as scout for the club and is well known in amateur circles of Boston. McGuire has not decided de-cided what ho will do, He has tho satisfaction sat-isfaction of knowing that ho lias won a j name for himself as a manager. |
