Show News of Ephraim. Special to The Tribune. EPIIRATM. April 12. The people of Ephraim are taking steps for temperance. At a meeting held In the principal's office at the Snow academy laat week it was decided to hold a public meeting Thursday Thurs-day night In the assembly hall. Steps will bo taken to organize a temperance league here. The speakers on temperance will he Professor George Christenscn of the Snow academy and the Rev. Mr. Mork of Mount Pleasant. It will be the intention to unite with all other towns of tho county to effect similar organizations. organiza-tions. A meeting of the City Council was held In the city hall, with all members present except Joseph E. Anderson. All reports of city officers were approved and all monthly bills were allowed Willard Pehersen npplled for a three months' retail re-tail llfpior license, and considerable discussion dis-cussion arose. Councilman Downs appeared ap-peared and stated that tho local saloon-inen saloon-inen wero constantly violating the laws by selling liquor to habitual drunkards andrmlnors. Councilman Christensen disclaimed dis-claimed any personal knowledge of such violations of law by the liquor dealers, and moved that the application be granted. grant-ed. A vote was tnken and came out as a tie. The Mayor cast the deciding vote In favor of the petition. The work of tea.rlnsr up the old plank walks preparatory to laying the cement Is now In progress. Tt looks now as though there would be about ihlrty blocks of cement laid as soon as the work can bo done. The Commercial club met Friday night in tho city ball and discussed the proposition propo-sition of moving the creek channel to tho north side of town. Larsen, James, Frost and S. P. Jensen were appointed on the committee to look into the practicability of tho plan. The Ephraim Gun club has ordered a shipment of Eastern brook trout fry', which will soon arrive and bo placed In the now canyon lake and several of tho streams. Tho Primary association presented an operetta at the opera-houso last evening to a good -sized audience. |
