The. fuel famine in this camp has become serious, the supplv of wood being exhausted. What fuel arrives from the hills is bid up by competitive buyers, the record price being $70 a cord. Tho, railroad is bringing in old ties, scattered along its right of way. These arc disposed of in lots not. greater than a quarter of a cord nt lo.w prices, Hundreds of cords of wood are on the way1, but are caught in the railroad blockade There is a similar scarcity of coal. When a carload arrives it is sacked and hauled to a street corner, where not more than throe sacks arc sold to any ono purchaser, who must arrange for delivery. de-livery. The intense cold and deep snow, coupled with the fuel shortage, has caused some suffering. . Relief, however, is in sight. Three carloads of coal will arrive tomorrow to be parceled out. Tho weather is moderating, moder-ating, Reports of sicknoss and death caused b- cold nud fuel famine are grossly exaggerated. The principal cause ' of suffering is due to the overcrowding over-crowding of tho camp. With lumber coming in building is resuming, and the camp will soon be able to care for all . comers. |
