Show SIDEWALKS HEEDED ABOUNHTEMPLE BLOCK Several Reasons Why the Improvement Im-provement Should Be Made. An unenterprising exhibit, for which there Is no reasonablo excuse excepting that It Is In kooplng with precedents of the Mormon church head officials In refusing re-fusing to kiep paco with modern methods, meth-ods, Is tho lack of concrete sidewalks on three sides of Temple square. On the south side of tho block, where such an improvement was obligatory by reason of South Temple street being paved, a cement ce-ment sidewalk has bc;n laid, but on the north, oast and west oldes of the block pedestrians ar compelled to wnlk over a coarse, uneven gravel brd that was not laid with a view to dralnnge. Tho result Is that in wet weather this walk la gritty, rough and muddy. Neither Is It pleasing to look upon. On the oppoidto sides of these streets thc sidewalks are all made of concrete. Sidewalks Should Go Down. Cement sidewalks aro either a .success or a failure. If they arc a success they should be put down around Tcmplo square. If they arc not a success they should be taken up in other parts of town and be replaced by primitive and ungainly gravel beds like that around this tract. Spiritual Center of "World. Temple squnro Is not only near tho business part of thc city, but, according to tho claims of tho management of that particular pleco of property, It Is tho spiritual center of tho world. This claim Is strengthened bv the further claim that the Tcmplo building, with its furnishings, cost the munificent sum of $3,0.000. In addition to this expense thero aro on the block the Tabernacle and Assembly hall, both expensive structures, and thc bureau of Information store. Why Improvements Should Be Made. With such largo investments on tho block there should bo better Improvements Improve-ments around thc block. If the block Is In reality tho terrestrial footstool of tho Almighty, whero such luxury and splendor .are maintained tho fringe around tho footstool should bo something more ornato and convenient than a gravel bed. Pointed Contrast. Tho contrast Is In keeping with an exhibition ex-hibition of tho voting woman moving from ono part of tov.n to another who woro a SH hat and carried the rest of her belongings In a 75-cent canvas telescope. tele-scope. This block Ib also the location of a commercial power plant that pumpn some $2,000,000 annually from tho servants of the church. Double Reason for Walks. If this Is a spiritual headquarters a better walk should bo erected as a matter mat-ter of respect to thc Creator. Being a financial headquarters a bettor walk should be constructed in Justlco to tho commercial community, and if dual headquarters head-quarters from an Aaronlc nnd Melchlzo-dek Melchlzo-dek standpoint thero Is double reason for the Improvement to bo made. No Sidewalk Shown. The Temple, the Tabernacle and President Presi-dent Joseph F. Smith aro pictured on every publication, tract and pamphlet put out to advertise tho Mormon church, and It Is an active advertiser, but the sidewalk side-walk Is not shown. Better sidewalks and less whiskers would Improve the attraction. |
