A report that an English railroad company had put on a smoking, car for women has given rise to an Instructive discussion which Indicates that Ameri-WOMAN Ameri-WOMAN SUFFRAGE IN ITALY. According to the Rome correspondent of the London Pall Mall Gazette woman wo-man suffrage Is becoming such a live Issue that the mere men of the Eternal City are writing to the newspapers in order to prove the inferiority of women and are already driven Into what looks suspiciously like a defensive position. Although the "subjection of women" Is rather more complete in Italy than .elsewhere, it Is by no means certain that tho victory in a pamphlet war would remain with tho men, while their political victory Is not foreordained since, according to the correspondent, the suffrage is not expressly withheld from woman by the Italian laws. It appears that a certain Slgnorlna Sacchl asked to be allowed to vote on the ground that It was not forbidden, and that the proper authorities, moved by a- chivalrous impulse, or perhaps a spirit of amused tolerance, granted har request. It so happens, however, that the voting lists have to be approved by a higher authority, which may fall to see the propriety of the demand, or tho Joke In It. But now a constituency has fallen vacant, and the slgnorlnn has been asked by its electors to make the race. In tho hope that she can be elected elect-ed a deputy before the dreaded higher authority can Interpose a veto by ordering or-dering a revision of the voting lists and the excision of the fair applicant's name. |
