Show m mm Food Trust May Soon Be Tiling of the Past, in Salt Lake. BUTCHERS AND GROCERS TO BE PROSECUTED Local Attorney Plans to Have Charter Revoked by State. Since tho announcement, was mode that; u grand jury has been called to in-I in-I quiro into tho workings of somo of the i ment incident to I ho recent, exposures j hns slightly abated and the Salt Lake public seems content to entrust the in-I in-I vestigation to th" courts. From the ! statements made by ninny interested ' business men during tho past t wo weeks ( it is to be inferrod that, many who have remained silent heretofore will fool re-! re-! assured and since thoy sod that the I wheels of the law have begun to move ' have determined to volunteer evidence I which does not rolled credit, upon the methods pursued by the business organizations organ-izations against which the inquiry is chiefly directed. Tt has been learned within the past two days that a local attorney has been pondering over the charter of the Butchers' and Grocers' association for the evident purpose of having this instrument in-strument revoked by the State. Whether Wheth-er he is working on his own initiative or because he is employed by others not known, although the latter would seem to be tho most reasonable supposition. suppo-sition. It may be that the action of the district judges iu granting the petition pe-tition for n grand jury will interfere with the attorney's plans but it is more probnblo that the jury will assist him in his work. Some of the butchers and grocers are now convinced that tho Salt Lake Real Estate association is not icsponsiblo for the prevailing high rents, since it has been explained that, the realty men aro seldom collectors for tho resilient owners own-ers of business property. They all maintain, however, that rents "on busiuoss properties aro too high and tho entire argument now seems to hingo on this one question, i They seem to forget that some specific charges of boycott, or attempted boycott. boy-cott. 'hnvc been mnde by both jobbers and independent retail grocers and that herein as well nfl in the alleged attempt of the association to control prices arc the features that may cause trouble. It may be pertinent to note in this connection connec-tion that last week four San Francisco retailers were cited to appear before a grand jury because collectively thej' threatened to withdraw their pntronnge from n jobber if he did not refuse to sell to a fifth retail dealer. It is renorted that a householder stopped n wagon near Farmington recently re-cently and asked the driver to price his tomatoes. The farmer said that he would fill as roanv orders as ho could get in Salt Lak'e City for $10 a ton, which is half a cont a pound. The lowest low-est retail price in this city is 4 cents a pound, Lorenzo Jensen, manager of tho Butchers' and Grocers' association, is fathering statistics nnd It is said that e will this evening have a list of forty grocery stores that are for sale at in-voico in-voico prices less ten per cent. This, of. course, is not intended to throw any light on the methods of the association but to show that the grocers are not all becoming Tich. |
