One of the most peculiar criminal cases ever re-curded re-curded in Montana Is up for trial today before Judge Loud in the District court. The case In that of the State against Charles Walters. The defendant is held on a charge of 'forgery, which ho preferred pre-ferred against himself. Walters forged the name of his employer here to a check for Slo, The crime was not discovered and Walters left this vicinity and wont to Spokane. There he surrendered him-pelf him-pelf to tho authorities, confessing the crime and asking that he be brought back to this county for trial, The Spokane Spo-kane officers communicated with local authorities with the result that Sheriff Savage went to Spokane and brought." the man back. Walters was employed here last fall by W. N. -Haynes. Just before giving up his position he forged the check, signing Mr. Haynes's name, and collected $15 on the paper from the George K. Foster company. When the check came back from the bank Mr. Haynes did not discover dis-cover that anything was wrong, and the crime would never have been discovered had Walters not made his confession in Spokane. |
