Show BUSINESS AND TRADE. Tho sensational matter of the week in business circles has been the development develop-ment in connection with tho charges made by tho Roal Estate Association of nnduo and concerted increase in the prices of produce and the necessaries of life by tho Grocers' and Butchers' Association As-sociation of this eit It is alleged that prices have been put up Jby agreement, and without any regard either to tho natural trend of prices or to tho ability of tho people to pay. As a matter of fact, tho prices havo been unduly high, as every ono knows. Judge Armstrong of tho Third District Court, on Friday, after consulting with the other judges, ordorcd the empaneling of a grand jury to inquire into tho alleged violation of tho satute against trusts and illegal combinations com-binations supposed to be involved in the matter. Tho jury will bo drawn at once, and no doubt will immediately get to work. In retaliation for tho attitude of the Real Estate Men's Association towards to-wards the-Grocers' and Butchers' Association, As-sociation, that association has made charges against tho landlords for rais- lnr. Mi n rnntc tt-iH-i t V n i A t -i -rti-l, ma that the real estate men who initiated the proceedings against them wero responsible re-sponsible for the raising of rents iu the same way that they themselves were responsible for the raising of the price of food products in this city. It will probably bo impossible to prove this; and, ns a matter of fact, there has been no allegation made of any similarity between the two cases, except as to the increase of pricos. The developments of the present week will be watched with interest, so far as they can be obtained ob-tained from the grand jury room. The splendid public improvements inaugurated in-augurated by the American administration adminis-tration continue to be the leading factor in Salt Lake City's business life. These improvements cover all phases of municipal muni-cipal betterment street paving, sewering, sewer-ing, increase of water service, sidewalking, sidewalk-ing, and the expanding generally of municipal benefits. The Council has exhibited ex-hibited a commcndablo public spirit in pushing thsc improvements so as to get as much as possible done before the oncoming winter. The Board of Public Works, on Friday, made awards of sidewalk side-walk contracts on tho north beuch at a considerable reduction over former bids for tho completion of that work. Another important recommendation of the Board was the resurfacing of Main street. The Board also recommended tho laying of six. inch in place of tho present four inch water mains on Brighani street from Tenth East to Federal Heights. There is a prospoct also now that tho Federal Heights matter may be satisfactorily adjusted, and that fine addition made part of the city. The extensive work being dono by tho Utah Light and Railway company on the street railway track in this city aud the prospective putting in by that company of a large number of up-to-date cars, form a very welcomo addition addi-tion to Iho public facilities. The old track was much worn, and was inadequate inade-quate for tho needs of a hustling, progressive pro-gressive city, such as this has now become, be-come, Mr. Harriman will spend some-whero some-whero from $1,000,000 to $1,500,000 on tho purchase of new cars, tho relaying of tracks and, life joining of the ends of his railway system, so as to make it comprehensive aud serviceable to all the people. Thero has never been a year iu the history of tho city when such magnificent magnifi-cent and general improvements havo buen pushed forward as tho present season. sea-son. It; ' is not at all likely lhat tho people, at tho coming election, will be willing to desert the present spirit of live activity and go back lo the death-in-lifp stagnation which has always accompanied ac-companied tho church control in this city. The rotaining of Americanism mean's progressive activity, and im- , monso growth in population, .business, beauty, and improvement in every way. On Friday4 Mr. David H. Moffat, head of. the.
