" I Joseph Smith, an old resident of Salt H Lake and a well-known mining man. H died in San Diego. Cal., on Saturday, of H miner's consumption. Advicec to this H effect wcro received last night bv U. H Mr. Smith was the original discov- KH erer of gold at Mercur, and he built i H the first cyunnle mill in the mountains, H if not the first one in the United Statc-s. f H He was one of the owners of the old IH Marion mine. IH He was born in Ireland, and came to kII Utah when a boy of 10 years, and has IH resided here ever since, lie was 65 H years of age. He aided in building H Fort Cameron, near Beaver. I'H For some time he had been in failing IH health, and on the 12th inst. left Salt H Lake for southern California in tho I'H hope of buttoring his condition, but SivH without avail, and the end came as SH stated. IH Mr. Smith was a bachelor and had H no relatives here, so far as known. For f H a number of years he has resided in the H old Board of Trade building on West IH Second South.
