Matters went all rie-nt until last night. The sticet car company had Its tracks laid part of tho way up Twenty-third, hut hud not crossed the point where the Rio Grande Western proposes to cross 1 the street, under tho recent franchise granted It. and which is necessary before the later road can reach the site of Its new freight depot on Twenty-fourth sir. i Lost night, or more correctly at th. beginning of this morning, a special train aame Into Ogden over the Rio Grande Western. On board of It was Roadmas-ter Roadmas-ter John J. Cronln and 150 Greek laborers. "ronln put his men to work at once, and before the Information of their presence reached the officials of the street car company, com-pany, the Rio Grande forces had three parallel tracks laid across Twenty-third street, Just in front of the work being done by the street car company. It appears that Just as soon as this part of the work was done Mr. Cronln divided his forces and moved part of them over to Twenty-second street, where the same work was completed and three tracks ore now laid across that street. This morning there was an Imminence of trouble trou-ble between the men of tho contending lores. I-i,h side work. 1 up lo the point Where the other was luylng track, and a conflk t between the workmen seemed Imminent. Im-minent. However. Mr i 'ronln of the IUo Grande and Joseph Flygare of the street car side w.re both on the ground, und while each wus trying for the advantage, both used their influence to avoid a conflict. con-flict. E. M. Allison. Jr . counsel for the Rio Grande, arrived here this morning und had B conference with Manager Qeorge H Mateon of the Ogden Rapid Transit company. While the details of tho conference con-ference were not given out. II has I n announced that the Rio Grande Western will be generous. The entire contention was ns to which company should first get Its tracks on the street. This would put the cost of a crossing of tracks on the second company. The Rio Grand won the first place, hut it Is stated that they have proposed to the Ogdon Rapid Transit company to share the expense of the crossing jointly. The forces of both sides are working peaceably now, and there is apparently no chance of an outbreak. The arrangements arrange-ments on the part of the Rio Grande were not begun In Salt Lake until 8 p. m. last night, and between that hour and midnight, when the special train arrived here, Mr. Cronln had gathered an nrmy of 150 men, with the necessary tools, and had transported them to Ogdon. |
