Show THE ST. PAUL EXTENSION. The railroad rumors come thick and fasL The latest is the elaborate programme pro-gramme outlined for the Chicago, Milwaukee Mil-waukee ft St. Paul, for a through line to the coast. The story comes with apparent ap-parent authority, from New York. Concurrently Con-currently with it. and confirmatory, was The Tribune's special yesterday morning from Welser, Idaho, which told of the arrival there of a gentleman who had made the voyage down the Salmon river In a skiff, from the great bend at Salmon city, to the junction of the Salmon with the Snake, and who was suppost-d to be making his exploration ex-ploration in the Interest of the Chicago, Chi-cago, Milwaukee &. St. Paul. And thi--supposition was rlfn before any one thereabouts knew of the announcement from New York of the projected extension, exten-sion, it is significant in connection with the two announcements, thai tho route down the Salmon river would be precisely the route which the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul extension to the northwest coast would find most direct and profitable, of the extension which Is Indicated; for it runs through a mineral region of great extent and known to be rich, but now so Inaccessible Inaccessi-ble that nothing but gold placers would pay to work. But with the construction construc-tion of a ralfroad down the Salmon river, a rich mining region of vast extent ex-tent would at once be opened up. and would afford a heavy railroad traffic. We hope that the reports are both true, for if ho, a great and rich region of this mountain countrv would be opened up. and its development would add material!) to the growth and wealth of Idaho and of the whole mountain region. At the same time, we do not doubt for a moment that the Chicago. Milwaukee Mil-waukee & St Paul. In its westward extension, ex-tension, will build a line to Salt Lake City, for here It could get. by the time its track could be completed, a direct I onnectlon through the Salt Lake route, with Southern California; could reach Portland via the Oregon Short Line, and San Francisco hy the choice of two routes, the Southern Paclfie and the Western Pacific; and all but the Western HaeiHr nre available now, It 16 undoubtedly an era of railway building In the western regions of the United States, and the lines now erm-PletM erm-PletM and under way from this city to the coast, make Salt Lake the entrepot en-trepot for the ennst connections, and give her the mmmand of the situation. |
