Show PAT CROWE SHOOTS OMAHA OFFICER IN LEG Fugitive Again Returns to Old Haunts and Again Escapes Es-capes Police. OMAilLV, Sept. C During a running fight between pollco officers and a man believed to be Pat Crowe, the alleged kidnaper kid-naper of Eddie Cudahy, and a companion, Just beforo midnight tonight. Patrolman Albert Jackson was shot through tho leg and the two men made their escape. None of tho other officers was Injured. A largo detail of officers was Immediately sent to tho spot to try to locate the fugitives. Tho light occurred on lower Sixteenth street, whero tho men wero discovered by Officer Jackson in a saloon. Had Force on Trail. Ever since Crowe returned to Omaha several weeks ago, Chief Donahuo has had a forca of ofllcers, most of them in citizens clothing seeking to capturo him. This task was extremely difficult because nono of the officers knew Crowe, Jackson being an exception. It was learned by the pol!c3 that Crowo was in Omaha and extra efforts were made to locale him. Jackson and Officer Leahy were sent to lower Sixteenth street, whero Crowe was believed to bo. Open Fire "When Followed. About 11 o'clock tonight Jackson saw a mun whom he recognized as Crowo with :! companion In a saloon at Sixteenth and Dorcas streets. Ho sent Leahy to a telephone tele-phone to secure additional ofllcers, meantime mean-time wat;hlng the man himself. The men left tho saloon Just as a car carrying additional ad-ditional officers came up, and Jackson started to follow them. Seeing that they were being followed, the two men opened llro on Jackson, emptying their revolvers, cno bullet breaking Jackson's leg. Ofllcers in Pursuit. Tho other officers started In pursuit, Jclnlng In tho fusillade of shots being sent after the fugitives The latter, however, made good a temporary escape Half the pollco force wax sent to tho district In which tho shooting occurred and was put to work to locate and arrest tho pair This they had not been successful success-ful In doing up to midnight. Don't Douht It Is Crowe. While the pollco have no positive knowledge that one of the men was Crowe, they do not hesitate to believe that such Is tho case. Officer Jackson, v.ho was acquainted with Crowe, says lhat there can be no doubt of the Identity Identi-ty of the man. He says the man recognized recog-nized him and leallzlng that he was an officer, took a desperate chance of getting away by using his revolver. Officer Iyeahy also says no Is sure that the man was Crowe. That thi fugitive is a desperate man there Is no doubt and every effort is being made to secure bis capture, as well as that of his companion. |
