Show THE RIGHT FRAME OF MIND. This Is reported to The Tribune as being an accurate synopsis of the conversation con-versation of two friends: Friend I see you are subpoenaed !n the Smoi.t case in behalf of the Senator. hat do they want you for? Witness They want me to t. stlfy whether the church Interferes in politics In his behalf. 1 can't legally prove that It dues, iind so I am going to sweur that it does not. Friend That's about right Now suppose sup-pose they ask you If the church Interfered to elect Senator Kearns. what will you answer f Witness V.'ell . 1 can't legally prove that il did; but everybody knows it, and if there were more people there would he more people that knew It So I am going to swear that It Is so And that is the exact frame of mind of most (but not all) of the witnesses who have been subpoenaed in this case. They know what they want to know, whether they can prove It or not; and i they don't know what they don't want to know, whether they can prove it or not. |
