Show I I SLIGHT LULL IN Wi WALL STREET i Vlj Heavy Trading of "Wednesday Gives Way to Mora Moderate 4 p( i Dealings. I B NEW YORK, March 24. A much small- k cr amount of business was transacted In TJ.B tho stock market today than on tho two 'S 1 i preceding days, and tho market showed fn I the effect of the cxtcnslvo realizing: which ',v 4 had bcon effected on thoso days and Iho j 1 jYi elimination of a largo portion of the short - Y ' Interest of the market. There was no ovl-J ovl-J .; denco of larger operations by powerful Sp ' forces which kept tho market stimulated k; ' yesterday and tho day before. . Tho source and tho purpose o these W I " operations havo been a cause of bewildor- j P. mcnt even to tho professional traders, h-4 who have followed them eagerly In tho j. n. Htock market to securo a profit In the re- ;! - suiting prlco movement. ij: Emphatic denials from official sources I, , that any largo Interest In Union Paclflo i was being accumulated by Northern Pa- .( - clflc or Great Northern Interests have ' ' somewhat shaken tho speculative which J havo received most credence ns to tho iLJ causo of tho enormous absorption of that (iJ stock on Tuesday. ! TI1I3 doubt Is emphasized by tho sudden :1m Bubsi8tcnco of the domand, Indicating that k " It has been satisfied, whatever source It U may have como from, leaving no solicitude ito sustain tho market prlco of tho stock. The Northern Securities plan of distribution distri-bution offora no reason for Its Bitdden and conclusive advance. Neither does tho explanation ex-planation of nn uncovered short interest servo to cxplan satisfactorily tho sudden buying of various Blocks In .vuch voltimo as has been seen this week. Yet tho buying buy-ing was Indubitable and tho spccuxatlvo world Is considerably bewildered by It. Today's nervous and Irregular market was tho roflectlon of this perplexity. Several Sev-eral Btocks .Including Amaig;unatdd Copper, Cop-per, -wore pushed up at different times u3 thouch to sustain tho market. The continued activity In tho curb market mar-ket for Northern Pacific and Great Northern North-ern preferred carried them snarply downward down-ward and confirmed tho suspicion with which tho previous rlso Is regarded. Goat Northern preferred, on the exchange, dropped over 7 points, leaving a wldo breach In the valuation nlaoed on tho slock tho purposes of distribution of Northern Securities assets. Further rains in the winter -wheat Dcit wero of no help to stocks In face of tho rlso Jn tho prlco of wheat futures. Conditions Con-ditions still further approached tho gold export point without affecting tho money Tho decline in London discounts increases in-creases tho disposition to withdraw French capital from there, and it Is this demand upon New York which It la expected ex-pected to draw gold from her. Tin continued con-tinued ease of money hero with this prospect pros-pect offera somo inducement to th-j holding hold-ing of securities with borrowed fm.ds ard is one of the reasons offered for iho Improved Im-proved demand for stocks. Tho weight of realizing upon the wholo market gained force and carrljd It down to tho lowest at the closing, which was weak. The bond market was irregular and not so active.
