Show STATEHOOD FOR OKLAHOMA J It looks very much as If the Senate Committee on Territories had determined deter-mined against the admission of Arizona and New Mexico rrhu House at the last l session of Congrens passed what was called the omnibus bill for the admission ad-mission of TerritorIes this included Arizona New Mexico and Oklahoma Since the former session this Senate committee haft made special Investigations Investiga-tions as to the propriety of admitting these three Territories nnd has apparently appa-rently concluded against the two of them first named f and In favor of giv ing the Indian Territory to Oklahoma for Statehood purposes and admitting the two as one Stale under the name of Oklahoma d This conclusion was reported re-ported to the Bennie yesterday from the committee by Senator Nelson of Minnesota Minne-sota as a substitute for the House bill It Is I sure to come up spon for action ac-tion by the Senateas U Is I at the head of the calendar The reasons which swayed the members mem-bers of the committee against the admission ad-mission of Arizona and New Mexico are not given but will probably be found to ho alien habits of speech und thought In New Mexico and sparsencss of population pop-ulation In Arizona the latter reason certainly would not apply to the two which It Is I proposed to admit Jointly for by the census of 1000 Oklahoma had 395331 I people and Indian Territory Terri-tory had GOLOSO It total of 700391 which Is far in excess of the population any OMicr state has nan l ai inu lime 01 us admission no fjlnlc had that many Inhabitants at the time of the formation forma-tion of the Union It seems like crowding things to force such a mass of people Into hne State even though the area Is I not great that of Oklahoma being 39030 square miles and iof Indian In-dian Tcrritory31400 square miles a total of 70TIO Which combined is considerably con-siderably less than thc area of Utah which has a surface of 81970 square miles But Oklahoma might fairly be admitted as a State on Its own merits ns it is liable to have a million people In Its present area by the time of the next Federal census as it jumped from a population of GI831 in 1S90 to 39S331 in 1900 and Is forging ahead tremendously tremen-dously Indian Territory might well be left alone for further Congressional action as there are important Indian questions to settle In that Territory which would Inflict upon a State an intolerable In-tolerable nuisance Uo note that Indians In-dians are made eligible as delegates to the proposed consillullonal convention that probably viheans that they are clothed with full citizenship and to throw together in one State a mass of Indians and whites on equal terms Is about the surest way we know of to precipItate more than plenty of trouble |
