Show GRAND CANYON DISTANCES Accurate Informallon Gained by tho Now Survey The dimensions of the Grand canyon have been the subject of much discus slon ever since it was first explored I may therefore bo o interest to give some figures Liken from this new survey sur-vey The average width from rim to rim does not exceed ten miles throughout through-out tho Knibab or widest section of the canyon and It frequently narrows down to eight miles The river doc not occupy upy the middle of the gigantic trough but flows al 1 distance varying between one and three miles from the south side Practically all ot the magnificently sculptured plnnaclco and mesas the s plnnaceD willed tcmplca lies north of the river and at distances of from five to seven miles from the viewpoints usually visited by tourSflts The depth of the Grand canyon In one way has been overstated in another overstated Measured from the eouth rim the total depth is considerably less than a mile From the rim at the n mie Bright Angel hotel where the altitude Is GS3G feet above sealevel to the high GG water mark of the river at the foot of the tourist rail the drop Is 1130 feet The highest point on the south rim at the Grand View hotel la I 749C feet above iOOO feet above the river From the north side however the drop to tho waterlevel averages considerably con-siderably over a mile and In many places even exceeds GOO feet It maybe may-be staled that the north rim is from 1000 slnt OO feet higher than the south thus producing that high even skyline so striking in all views obtainable by the tourist The figures here given are based on spiritlevels run In connection connec-tion with the map work They are the first that have over been run to the bottom of the chasm and the high standard of accuracy maintained throughout will cause them to be considered con-sidered authoritative and final |
