Show ADMIRAL EVANS AND PRINCE HENRY Under the title Prince Henrys Hob AmerIcan Impressions Admiral icy D Evans of Utah contributes a tvely article to McClures Magazine for May The Admiral was by the special request of the Emperor of Germany detailed as n special aidedecamp In the suite of the Prince while he was in this country and as such was constantly tantly with him Evans had formed 0 personal friendship both with the Emperor Em-peror and with Prince Henry while on service representing this country on the occasion of the formal opening of the Emperors pet canal at Kiel Ac ordingly when tho Prince landed hereon here-on this visit he expressed his gratiflca lon that an old friend should be the first to welcome him He was jolly companionable and most appreciative throughout the whcle of his visit One or the most striking experiences of tho Princes rounds In this country coun-try was his very cordial reception by fie GermanAmerican part of the popu oftlon The Prince was equally cordial and advised them to show their quality by being always zealous and loyal supporters sup-porters of their adopted country The vast crowds that turned out to greet the visitor cheered him most cn husiastlcally The crowds everywhere were goodnaturedly demonstrative and tho visitor seemed to enjoy It all Even when the boys on the street would call out Hello Henry or Vhercs Henry Hello he would answer or Here 1 amt II am Henry or with his linger pointing to his breast Here Is Prince Henry I they said Hello Prince how are you he would reply All right how are you 1 Ills use of English extended to bits of slang as when he said one day I If we are to get through well have to hustle and on one occasion he said thats a cinch When someone some-one asked him to make a speech in Boston he said Not on your life Atone At-one of the receptions In Bostqn a very long speech was being fired off at him when he looked at Chief Wllkle and made a motion Inside his coat where he knew Wllkle carried a pistol the motion being interpreted as C suggestion sugges-tion to shoot th2 orator The Prince enjoyed the popular acclaim and wanted to go everywhere and see everything every-thing he wanted to visit the slaughterhouses slaughter-houses at Chicago but was dissuaded i for fear some oC the Polandera there might do him an Injury He wanted to ride on the locomotive and did so for a hundred miles from Summit Sum-mit toward Piitsburg Ills fondness for machinery and industrial operations was marked He wanted to stop the train so that he might Inspect the oil wells In Ohio and was anxious to seethe see-the electric light plants at various points but was able only to see that at Niagara Falls which he went over thoroughly He met various of the captains of Industry J PIerpont Morgan Charles Schwab and others and pumped them Indefatlgably He enjoyed negro minstrel performances In his honor and seeing Booker Washington at a function in the Wal dorfAstoria asked that he be presented pre-sented saying he regarded him as the leading man of his race Ho did not meet many women but among the crowds the women of Milwaukee Mil-waukee struck him as the most beautiful beau-tiful As they drove along in that city tine Admiral writes I was fully occu pied with the faces on my side of the carriage yot Prince Henry kept calling my1 attention to those on his side At last I warned him that each had enough to do watch his own share and that If we both tried to see all there were on both sides of the road We should soon be crosseyed After that we left each other alone and yet saw an amazing number of beautiful faces This Is anew a-new fame for Milwaukee ha the old fame anything to do with It The Prince wanted to Bee the Went and regretted that his visit was so timed us tp forbid It But Evans Invited In-vited him to come over at another time and have a hunt In the Western mountains moun-tains It la to be hoped that ha will acrept uiid thnt President n oren ore-n coiTib Alonff av counselor > amj friend I Evans should sW r him to hIS old cammingground le Vlll bring him jSlralght I to this city To the above we may add a story IA i i1 r told In tho Leslies Weekly oC jVprll 17th which Is Prince Henry of Prua sin who was recently the Natlons guest was deeply l loved by his father the late Emperor Frederick 1 wag to him that the Emperor wrote on a slip Of paper when he was no longer able to speak You at least have never moments sorrow and will given me a moments srroW make as good a husband as you have been a loving son And after his I death learned that the Emperor had it I was leCmcd that left the largest portion oC his fortune to his beloved son Henry |
