Show THE SALARY SCHEDULES The City Council seems to be slashing slash-ing the proponed rnlFcs In salaries In a most ruthless manner and seems disposed dis-posed Instead of insisting on tIt men In all the offices to fix the salaries on the idea of paying men it thinks unable un-able to do the work less pay than the work is worth The tendency we note is not for Increase merely for the Fake I of increase which will suit the taxpayers tax-payers and the slate of the city treasury treas-ury uryThe The true rule Is to pay what the work Is worth as determined by the pay which persons receive in private employment em-ployment for like service and that gauge is by no means difficult to reach But we renew our suggestion that the pay of Councilmen should be the highest of all as they have control con-trol ot all and every other depaitment of the city government is dwarfed In the comparison with them The man who under the present system of municipal mu-nicipal government completely fills the bill as a Councilman is a man of parts and ability by no means second to any municipal officer of whatever grade of ability or attainment and he should be paid enough so that he can and should be compelled to devote his whole attention to municipal affairs af-fairs and make the citys interests his own This Is the immediate municipal reform that is needed and it should be fairly paid for |
