Show SENATOR CLARK TALKS Makes Statement Detailing Plans of San Pedro Company New York April 18 United States Senator W A Clark of Montana tonight to-night gave to the Associated Press the ollowlne detailed statement regarding the differences between the Union Pacific Pa-cific interests and thfe San Pedro Los Angtles Salt Lake Railway company I and the plans of the latter l company I A year ago the two companies hnd rival construction Gangs at Mountain Valley wash each eager to forestall the other and ready to resort to physical physi-cal violence to accomplish the end desired de-sired Now Senator Clark and his nd icrents have leased the Oregon Short Line south of Salt Lake City and will construct about 100 miles of road from Callentes Nev westerly through Cajon P UHS to San Bernardino where connection ion will bo made with about eighty tI Ive miles of traclt already In operation between > San Pedro Loa Angeles and Riverside SENATORS STATEMENT There has been a great deal printed about the plans of the new road but no complete statement said Senator Clark has been made As president of the road I believe I ought to make everything clear There IB now perfect mrmony between the Union Pacific company and the new interests The San Pedro Los Angeles Sail Lake road Is authorized to Issue 50 000000 bonds and has 25000000 capital sleek Jt has leased 1 for ninetynine years the Oregon Short Line system south from Salt Lake City to Calientes i railway system of 223 miles Besides the main line there are two shorter lines taken over Most important is the Leamington cutofE extending from Salt Lake to Leamington Utah where It joins the Oregon Short Line I cuts off a great deal of track and Is 117 miles long besides having lower grades LINE OF ROAD From Callentes Vvcst I have already had forty miles of grading done The qnjl will so tluough Mountain Valley wash The wash IB the dry channel of a mountain stream At Cajon pass we will find a grade of 106 feet to the mile and the next hlghcst grade Js only see se-e fynl eet hlphest > cost will average 30000 a mile I I WILL REBUILD SHORT I INE The Oregon Short Line system under our control will be rebuilt with heavier rails and the best of equipment The road from San Pedro to Los Angeles and Riverside now has the best Pull man and other rolling stock and the whole system will be equipped accord ngly Last year 25000 carloads of fruit were raised In the Los Angeles section and there are orchards which in less than live years will produce 50000 cnr loads Tills new line will take fruit rains from that section Immediately Into a cooler altitude a great desideratum desidera-tum In such perishable shipping TWENTYFOURHOUR RUN I The distance from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles Is 800 miles by this new route and we intend to cover it in twentyfour hours Now traffic from Salt Lake City and north thereof reaches Los Angeles via San Francisco not less than 1300 miles At San Pedro there is building a 3 000000 breakwater and Wilmington bay is being dredged Into n line harbor This side of Riverside there Is building an 800foot concrete bridge the longest nnd with the highest span of any similar 1 simi-lar structure TERMINALS IN SALT LAKE Our terminal facilities at Salt Lake City will he equal to the Oregon Short Lines and we will connect with the Union PncilR and Gould systems The I mineral wealth that our rond will tap equals that of the Messaba range No bonds have been issued on the Los Angeles road so far completed and 515000000 of the SoO000000 bonded debt will bo reserved for branch linen or kept in the companys treasury With me there are interested among others Senator Kearns and W S Mc Cornick of Salt Lake City R C Kerens and the Bemls brothers of St Louis J Ross Clark of Los and my brother Ls Angeles |
