Show J I Ii i WHERE OUR HOPE LIES I t If Breakup Occurs on Coast Salt Lake Butts In I IF NOT WE DONT CARE Baseball Assured Here What I ever Happens Elsewhere I I Ii I i i Progress Has Been Made in Direction 1 of Promoting Interurban I League Games I It Is evident from reports concernIng concern-Ing the baseball battle on the coast that the Pacific National league is up Jigulnst a hard fight Even the newspapers news-papers out there refer to the outsiders I or those who are not the native sons of California nnd who arc endeavoring to coerce the California public Into standing for a partially native and partially par-tially outside league the opposition About the same nmount of space In the Sun Francisco papers Is devoted to the opposition as to tho Pacific Coast a league but for some reoson the attendance I at-tendance Is not nearly up to the standard stand-ard at the games of the Pacific National Nation-al The weird and rather Improper r name of the old Northwesterns Is not ii I the winner that It was probably Intended In-tended to be It Is not a true national league and the gentle smooth word Pac Pa-c doesnt slip down the throats of the Californians with the word national attached with the same apparent ease that the rougher term coast does NO ONE KNOWS It Is not possible to judge of the work of the two leagues from what the several sev-eral teams In each have done No one knows whether the Pacific National players are handing up higher class t ball than their enemies It is a fact however that dewplte the better patronage patron-age of the native son Fthe Pacific Coast fellowsthere have been more desertions b de-sertions from the ranks of the coast I crowd than from those of their opponents oppo-nents Somebody must have money or good Inducements to cause players to I I i quit and cripple teams as some of the I Pacific Coast players have done Another An-other noticeable thing has been that a these desertions have generally been made In favor of getting on with clubs of the opposition DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND What the result of all this will be Is hard to foretell The Pacific National v league belongs to the association of minor mi-nor leagues and has thin backing It Is i a valuable thing on the face of it but I whether It has the necessary underlying underly-ing strength is not so sure It will pickup pick-up players from the runaway squads oC 11 the Pacific Coast and It Is likely that these same men would be acceptable to them In the event they double crossed nevcral times There Is nothing for them to protect themselveT against Plnyeia are not plentiful that la men who can last to make a creditable fight such as Is most desired by the Pacific Nationals at this time They have little lit-tle protection against contractJumping players so long as there remain good I Jobs for these men on the teams of the opponent league It is possible of course that the league that looks good i during the next month will have an overplus of players and applications for positions on Its teams but If the Pacific National ciowd once blacklist a man and intend to rorce him to give up and there Is no chance for him In the other camp he will naturally blow away In such a case If there becomes a dearth of players it is not clear what the membershlpin the association J of minor leagues will avail the Pacific National league magnates They cant very well supply the players to continue such a losing fight and it would entail a tremendous tre-mendous outlay of money on the part of the magnates In the Pacific National league and It they have notthe patron age what can they gain by continuing inich a battle It IB nol likely that such a fight would continue throughout an entire season WHAT WE WAIT FOR Therein lOB the cherished hope of a large number > of thc basebal loving a eople of thIn city and other places > In Utah and in Idaho as well It Is ns I Burned that in the event the Pacific NfL 4 tlonol directors discover that the1 are I I I trying to play to prejudiced people In the eWeR along the coast and in Lower California they will draw oft and look elsewhere to find unbiased baseball critics who arc capable of Judging whether they arc being handed good ball or the raw and rotten article Anyway Any-way in Salt Lake Ogden or most anywhere any-where In the intermountain country the baseball fans find themselves compelled to stand for a single kaue and such a tiling as a six or tin eightclub league Is the height of the ambition of the baseball base-ball promoters of Salt Lake Salt Lak ers generally are not hoping for the downfall of the Pacific National league on the coast but If that league butts Into something that Is a plain losing game local sports may reasonably cry out for the opportunity to better their own cause OUTLAWS MAY WIN OUT It Is Judged that the two leagues will clash like tWO great waves for a time when finally I the greater force the sentiment of the public out coastward will assert itself and will cither smother the Inland wave or turn It backward to run into another channel This channel may be the Oregon Short Line railroad that will lead the clubs to Salt Lake and Ogden where it IB hoped to have teams capable of competing com-peting with the best that are now showing to the people In San Francisco Fran-cisco and Sacramento and holding the Inhabitants of those places enthralled There is one thing that must be removed re-moved from the bed of the channel That Is the high rate business which In the past hoe proved an impassable clam to the successful operating of a baseball league It would l be rather an expensive proposition to make this wave of local baseball prosperity a goby go-by doubling back on Itself over the route of the Oregon Short Line but no other way appears possible Just now Whatever develops In the coast baseball base-ball war however the people of Salt II if w I J 1 r I I 1 I ii 1m I j 4 II t 1 I II ji i ilH r r J J > 1 II j If 6 I F i I LIKXSAY ROGERS New President Salt Lake Baseball Club Lake will see a high class kind of baseball between tthe two cities In Utah and if the opportunity presents itself to get Into a bigger and possibly better league It will be snapped up otherwise other-wise the fans will go straight ahead hire and handle their own affairs Once it gets going well it is expected that those who own the game which inn sense means everybody may sit back and look on attheir own business running itself |
