Show OIL IN COLORADO S Boulder Field Investigated by an Export Ex-port and the Result Is Sum mnrized TRIBUNE SPECIAL Washington April 18The Boulder oil field Colorado haa been 01 fcld Invest gated during the last year by Prof N r Fenneman of the United States Geological Geo-logical Sure The principal results of his investigation are given below summarized from a report which is now In press Attempts to find oil in the vicinity of Boulder date back to 186 The surface Indications consist of a strong bitumi noUn odor of certain shales and of seepages called oil springs The region bord rs the foothills most of the drilling being in nearly horizontal horizon-tal strata about three miles east of the hogbacks in which the rocks are upturned at angles of 50 t 00 degrees The drilling is in the upper 2000 or 3000 feet of the Fort Pierre shale whose thickness here is over twice that number num-ber of feet The drill encounters mostly shale with local hard streaks and shells and occasional sandy layers gas These sandy layers bear oil and some gasFrenh Fresh and salt water are encountered occasionally but holes are generally dry below 100 or 200 feet Some required re-quired casing to avoid caving The local sandy layers which yield the oil have small lateral extent and may occur at any depth They often overlap so that two or three are pierced in one well No communication appears ap-pears to exist among such sands Shooting of wells is general but not univeral Some wells have been Injured In-jured by the use of too heavy charges or by shooting at the wrong place with the result of compacting instead of shattering the rock The source of the organic matter givIng giv-ing rise to the oil in In the Fort Benton Ben-ton or Fort Pierre beds the lower of these beds being more bituminous than I the upper I Eightytwo wells had been drilled or started up to February 1 1903 Nine thousand barrels of oil were pumped prior to December 15 1902 About 200 barrels n day were pumped during January Jan-uary 1903 |
