Show BURDIGiC INQUEST ON Sensational Evidence Given Before Coroner DOCTOR THE STAR WITNESS Declares Officer Asked Him to Make Murder a Suicide Examined Body of Dead Millionaire and Told Official It Was Impossible to Entertain Suicide Theory Buffalo March 141he inquest into the murder of Edwin IrBurdlck was begun In the Police court here tony to-ny before Judge Murphy Among the first witnesses to appear were Mrs Seth T Payne Miss Barrett the stenographer who boards with Mrs Payne and A Carlson another boarder at the Payne residence Mrs Payne was accompanied by counsel Only one witness at a time was admittcr into in-to the courtroom Dr Howland assistant medical examiner ex-aminer was the first witness He handed to Judge Murphy the report of the medic examiner on the death of Burdick which stated the causo oC the death Under the law we are compelled to hold thlu inquest said Judge Murphy We charge no one with this crime The purpose of this Investigation Is to lay this crime If possible at the door of some one Dr Howland was examined by District Dis-trict Attorney Coatsworth He said ho had been summoned to the Burdick home by telephone on the morning of February 27th Dr W H Morcy met him at the door and told him that something had been going on there and that Mr Burdick waR dead I am not sure continued Dr How land but I think he told me he was not certain whether It wan murder or suicide He asked mft to make it out asa as-a case of suicide If possible as there had been a good deal of gossip in tho neighborhood expecting tho relations existing between Mr and Mrs Bur dick dickThe The witness paid ho then examined the body and told Dr Marcy that it was impossible to entertain the suicide theory for a minute Asked as to what further conversation he had with Dr Marcy the witness said Dr Marcy told him of the proceedings in the Burdick family Dr Howland repeated the conversation conversa-tion ho had with Mrs Hull as lo the finding of the body of Bur < 1lck tho finding find-ing of a window open the fact that there were no trades in the snow outside out-side the window and the finding of the open drawer Another thing tho witness said Dr a Marcy told him was that lie found the window curtains In the den drawn and being unable to raise them tore them down He also told mo that a quilt had been wrapped three timed about the head of the murdered man said Dr Howland and that he had found a pool of blood on the floor Mr CoatBUorth brought out the fact that Burdlcks body had been moved by the murderer after the crime had been committed The witness saw no weapon in the roomWhat What was your conclusion as to whether Burdick was killed In the den1 denI I think he was Do you think he was killed on the conch I think he was on the couch When he was killed was he lying on the couch In the position in which you found the body Judging from the location of tho wounds he must have been lying In I some other position at the time he was struck |
