Show IN HONOR OF DIPLOMATS ITirst Formal Evening Levee oC tho Season Given by President and Mrs Roosevelt Washington Jan President and Mrs Roosevelt gave a reception at the White House tonight In honor of the diplomatic corps I was the first formal for-mal evening leveo of the season and the first at which President and Mrs Roosevelt lm ebeen the host and hostess A full representation of the diplomatic corps made the affair notably no-tably brilliant The floral decorations were handsome hand-some and elaborate There was < del cate draping of the immense chandeliers chan-deliers in the cast room with a wealth of smilax llhe Immense mirrors were banked with roses carnations hyacinths hya-cinths and lilies of the valley while In i the large recesses around the room there were largo Jars of variegated crotons The ceiling pillars and other portions of the room were beautifully decorated In the large red blue and green parlors the lloral display was simple In character being confined loa lo-a few growing plants and cut flowers President and Mrs Roosvelt received c their guests In the blue room Their entrance was announced by u fanfare of trumpets by members of the United States Engineer band stationed in the IonS l corridor Assisting the President and Mrs Hoosevelt were Mrs Root Mrs Knox Mrs Smith Mrs Hitchcock Hitch-cock and Miss Wilson The diplomatic corps accompanied by the ladles of thp legations assembled assem-bled In tho red parlor and headed by Sir Julian Pauncefote the dean of the corps passed the receiving party the Introducing being made by Col Theodore Theo-dore Bingham After them were received re-ceived the higher ofliclals of the army and navy the members of the Supreme court many Senators and Representatives Representa-tives In Congrosa and a large number of resident society folk of Washington President Rooaevelt gave each visitor visit-or a hearty handclasp and a cordial welcome while Mrs Roosevelt though refraining from grasping the hands of visitors generally was charmingly gracious In her manner Shecarried a large bunch of white and purple orchids All the members of the diplomatic diplo-matic corps wore the full insignia of their rank which with the brilliant uniforms of tho army and navy and the handsome toilets of the ladles made the scene a memorable one Hours of reception were from 0 to 1 oclock Musfc was furnished by the Marine band and the United States Engineer band |
