Show SCHLEY Will APPEAL Admiral l Has a Conference L With President ROOSEVELT GRANTS REQUEST Schley Proposes to Exhaust avery JMeans In His Power to Overturn the Judgment Which Has Been Rendered Against Him His New Appeal Will Be Different rom That Submitted to the Department Which Will Bring Out New Tacts Which Have Important Bearing Washington Jan 7The object of Admiral Schlcys visit to the While House yesterday was to request tho President to entertain and consider an appeal for the reversal oc the action of Secretary Long and the disapproval of the majority Judgment of the court of inquiry The Interview was satis1 I factory the President granting the Admirals Ad-mirals requestS request-S SATISFIED The Interview with the President was I arranged In advance and at its conclusion 1 con-clusion Admiral Schley left the While House In D satisfied state of mind He i i had been given tl full opportunity to present the case from his standpoint and to acquaint the President with I many details with which the latter could not have any knowledge ALLEGED INJUSTICE SHOWN While Admiral Schley would not make any statement regarding the matters discussed holding that any Interview between a naval officer and his commandcrinchlef should be regarded re-garded as confidential It Is understood that he brought to the Presidents attention at-tention many of the alleged Injustices and dlsdrjpancles i of the majority report of the court of Inquiry NEW FACTS BROUGHT OUT Admiral Schlcys Interview with the President was the result oC his determination deter-mination to exhaust every means In his power to overturn the Judgment which has been rendered against him His new appeal will be different from I that submitted to the department bringing out some new facts which have controversy an Important bearing upon the CLOSETED WITH COUNSEL Messrs Rayner and Tcague counsel for RearAdmiral Schley came over from Baltimore today and were closeted for soeral hours with their client Admiral Ad-miral Schley would not discuss the matter beyond stating that he had asked his counsel to come here that ho might acqiflUn t them with the result of his talk with President lloopcvelt and agree upon the best method of bringing the facts before the President MATTER TO BE PUSHED While It Is not definitely known how much time was afforded in which to prepare the appeal it is understood to be the wish of President Roosevelt that the matter be presented as early as possible I The following statement was given I out by Admiral Schlcys counsel at the I conclusion of the conference WHAT COUNSEL SAYS Admiral Schley has concluded after mature and careful deliberation to appeal ap-peal from the majority decision of the court of Inquiry to the President of the United States as commanderInchlcf of the army and navy The action hav ing been determined upon nothing more can b divulged at this time the regu lations of the navy being such reg the nature of the proposed appeal cannot can-not be revealed except by the Presi dent after the formal documents have been filed with him WILL TAKE TIME Mr Raynor stated that It will take time to prepare the appeal and that It will not be fled with the President un t after the return of Admiral Schley from his visit to Savannah about the 20th Inst |
