Show THE DEATH OF COL ESKRIDGE Colonel Richard I Eslirldge whos death at Manila on August 29th was announced an-nounced recently WaSA man who sean se-an example of patriotic courage and fidelity and whose nobility oflife and conduct on every occasion call for the highest recognition and the yarmcs praise lIe was mustered Into the service or his country on September 10 1S01 and served cfllclontly throughout the civil war and was honorably mustered Cul as Captain November 17 1SG5 But his taste for a military life was whettec by his four years service and being favorably passed upon he was mustered mus-tered into the regular service on the 23d of February 1SCC as second Iilcutenon In the Fourteenth infantry promoted to First Lieutenant March 22nd following to Captain September 1 3SJ3 Major Tenth infantry April 17 1S97 Lleuten ant Colonel Twentythird Infantry March 2G 1S9D and Colonel February i fbi having been retired the some year He won the Captains brevet September 26 ISC by conspicuous gallantry gal-lantry In charging a large band oC indians In-dians strongly fortified In the Infernal Caverns Pitt River California we quote from the ofilclul record His service in the Cuban war was of conspicuous ornllnntry he was severelv n wounded by a bursting shell thrown from Cervoras heel while he was directing di-recting his regiment the Twentythird In the armys operations against Santiago Santi-ago agoCol Col IDskridge came to Fort Douglas with his regiment the Twentythird on the close of the war in Cuba August 9 1000 to February S 1901 He was promoted Colonel on the Oth of that month and was retired during the year I He desired to go with his regiment regi-ment when It was ordered to the Philippines Phil-ippines but as he was still suffering from his severe wound General Miles ordered him to remain and he was given command of the Presidio Col Eskrldge made many friends during dur-ing his residence In Utah and they will all grieve at the news of his death His was a high generous soul may his memory ever be cherished |
