Show I THE BRITISH ARMY On October 27 1899 Gen Joubert wrote from before Ladysmlth of the war In this letter he predicted that up to the first week In December the British could not put to exceed 85000 men In the field and of these 10000 he thought would have to be deducted for killed wounded and prisoners He I thought that half lie remainder would have to ho detailed for guarding and transpoitiii supplies To oppose the I remainder he had 60000 soldiers and thought he could get along very well without the aid of the Boers of Natal I or the Cape U is said however that within the pnst month thousands from Natal and the Cape have joined the Boers But the British have not been idle and it Is i believed that within throe wceka Gen Roberts will have 150000 British troops under his command This will be the biggest British army ever put In the Held Indeed It will be twice as big an drmy as she has ever sent to war This shows how grave she I holds the present situation to be In the final effort to crush Napoleon of the allied army which Wellington commanded com-manded at Waterloo not much more than 30000 were British It seems clear that when the present war Is over Great Britain will have about 150000 fighting men trained for service and the nations that arc now declaring that her prestige Is about gone will then have to be a little careful for that many trained men backed by 750 warships war-ships are war factors that cannot be ignored |
