Show ANOTHER PIONEER GONE GEORGE WAUDLE PASSES AWAY AT VERNAL Flrts Potato Planter in Valley First Teacher of Dancing1 Only a Few Surviving Pioneers Ever since the Pioneer Jubilee of 1897 the band of survivors of the original pioneers has been steadily growing less The latest to die Is George Wardlo who passed away November 25th at Vernal Utah aged SI years He wan born in Leek Staffordshire Eng February 3 1S20 and Joined the church In 1812 He came Into Salt Lake valley on July 21st of the year 1S47 and he and George A Smith planted the first potatoes In Utah He was a great fiddler and organized the first dancing school in Salt Lake He taught dancing also In Mercy R Thompsons loghouse and among his early pupils were President Joseph F Smith and the late George Q Cannon He was a member of the Nauvoo brass band and he with James Smithers conducted the singing for the ceremonies incident to the laying of thc cornerstone of the Salt Lake Temple Tem-ple in 1853 He had two wives and twentyfour children and only his second wife and eight children survive him Nine of the surviving pioneers have died since the Jubilee The sole survivors sur-vivors to date are supposed to be George W Brown Thomas P Cloward F 33 Dewey Isaac P Decker O F Eastman Aaron Farr Green Flake John S Gleason L N Kendall Conrad Klelnmann J W Norton A P Shum way W C A Smoot J W Stewart Horace Thornton W P Vance Reason Walker George Woodard and Lorenzo S Youn |
