Show INDORSE THE MESSAGE I Salt Lake People Like the l Presidents Statements GIVES GREAT HOPE TO WEST Plans for Reclamation of Arid Lands the Feature Most Pleasing to Citizens Citi-zens of tho West Message Commended Com-mended by Democrats and Republicans Republi-cans Alike Gov Wells Will Write to President Roosevelt to Express Utahs Appreciation of His Attitude Atti-tude Toward tho West President Roosevelts message to Congress was commended by men of all parties and occupations In Salt Lake so far as It has been read While there were comparatively few who found time yesterday to read the entire paper the opinion was generally expressed that the message was a straightforward vigorous expression oC the policies to be pursued by the Administration Salt Lakers found great cause for congratulation congratu-lation In the friendly attitude of the President with regard lo reclaiming the arid lands As Sir Roosevelt was a Western rancher before he was President Presi-dent there Is general confidence that he will do great things for the Western States A few expressions of opinion from officials representative business and professional men are given below THE BEST YET SAYS GOV WELLS Gov Wells It is the best message ever delivered by any President It Is patriotic and able to a degree and sets forth the policies of the Administration In a straightforward vigorous manner l The President has done very well by the West and I intend to write him a letter stating Utahs appreciation of ilc thorough grasp and understanding he has of Western conditions and needs Ills attitude In regard to trusts Is firm and consistent with his wellknown views when he was Governor of New York At that time It will be remembered remem-bered he always favored publicity of accounts as the best preliminary to the solution of the trust problem The references ref-erences to the tariff are satisfactory except that the President seems inclined in-clined to favor a reduction of the sugar duties a step which would be Inimical to the beetsugar interests It seems to me the best thing is to let the tariff alone and use the surplus In the Treasury Treas-ury for building storage reservoirs in the West to reclaim the arid lands United States Marshal Glen Miller It Is a remarkable paper and bears the stamp of Roosevelts Individuality In every paragraph The West finds spell spe-ll clal cause for gratification In the t recommendations for storage reservoirs j to conserve the water for irrigation 1 purposes This is what the people of the West have been striving for for many years and they now have the satisfaction of seeing it embodied In a message to Congress Judge O W PowersI have not yet found time to read the message entirely 1 through but what I read pleased me i very much It is written In a clearcut convincing style and has the ring of r sincerity The West has especial reason rea-son to be pleased with the recommendations I recommenda-tions in regard to irrigation Dr T B Beatty It Is a very able document patriotic and lofty In tone vigorous and manly in exactly ex-actly what we should expect from President Pres-ident Roosevelt E W Wilson It Is a good message but does not bear much similarity to the Republican platform The recommendations recom-mendations In regard to the arid lands of the West are exactly In line with what the Western people have been asking In regard to the trusts the Presidents attitude Is not very definite defi-nite and It Is evident that he has no disposition to make erlous interference Interfer-ence W J HalloranIt is the best message i I ever read President Roosevelts statements are straightforward and J clear cut and It is evident that he will j I carry out vhat he believes In without Ian I-an swerving or compromise J i Bishop Scanlan am very much 1 pleased with the message It Is a straightforward commonsense document docu-ment exactly what one would expect from such a man as President Roosevelt Roose-velt The recommendation In regard to Irrigation in the West Is especially pleasing as it means homes for many thousands families SHOWS ITS AUTHOR District Attorney Elchnor The message mes-sage Is certainly original and shows that it was written by the President Presi-dent himself It reads Just as he has always written and spoken Those who have feared that Mr Roosevelt was not large enough for the place will surely admit their error today His treatment of the storage of waters is practical and timely It will please the West and open the eyes of those in the East who think there Is nothing worthy of the consideration of Congress west of Chicago Chi-cago Rev Peter A Slmpkin It Is the best state paper that has been presented to the country In a long term of years The characteristics of the man shine out remarkably r In the document which shows the writer to be decidedly optimistic op-timistic and not only the latest but the bfggest uptodate man His attitude atti-tude on the storage reservoirs shows that he Is conversant with the needs of the West and not afraid to express himself I am sorry that he did not urge the admission of Arizona and New Mexico to Statehood Arizona Is surely sure-ly ripe for admission and they are both entitled to home rule County Physician MayoI have read only a part of the document and some of the commepts of the foreign press The Presidents statement that officeholders office-holders shall be appointed for fitness and merit Is the part of the message that has made the greatest Impression on me andof course meets with my warmest approbation |
