Show JuN DIEGO RD BRO KEN Velocity of Seventy Miles Per Hour Reached i STORM A PECULIAR ONES Windstorm Which Broke Over the City Last Evening Was Only About Two Miles in Width and Game From tile Northwest Blew at Bate I of Sixtyfour Miles Per Hour for Fivo Minutes and Reached Seventy Miles at One Time Damage at the Race Track Many Trees Down SIt Lako was visited by a phenomenal phenome-nal windstorm at 740 last evening In addition to the miscellaneous so and HpHcful characteristics of the storm the Utah record for velocity was also reduced lo fragments Preceding the breaking of the storm the skies assumed a leaden hue and a few drops of rain fell nt Intervals Those who were watching the pranks of the elements saw small patches of clouds shifting rapidly hither and thither and winding In and out as if tossed upon a tempestuous sea Then came a guest of wind from the northwest which while severe was only a forerunner of the main storm and pedestrians grabbed nt their headgear head-gear which evidenced a strong inclination inclina-tion toTrtce a free ride upon the crest of the storm At the same lime the accumulated ac-cumulated dust in the alleys and side streets started out lo join In the atmospheric atmos-pheric jainbouree and for a minute or more the conditions were extremely aggravating ag-gravating GOT DOWN TO BUSINESS This however proved to be only a prelude to the main show After a short Intermission the storm broke in all Its fury and the record went glimmering glim-mering The best view of the storm was perhaps obtained from the Dooly block After the first severe gust of wind a number of men and women who had sought refuge in the postofllce corridor emerged ana started east on Second South street They had Just reached the northeast corner of the building when the storm overtook them Women screamed and men made remarks that would not look well in print while Jaunty sailors and other forms oC feminine headgear bade a sudden farewell to their terrified owners and sailed merrily away In company with saucy derbies and blase slouches whom they would not think of recognizing under ordinary circumstances without a formal introduction FEAR SEIZED PEDESTRIANS At the same time the storm picked up all the dUst loose papers and other forms of refuse which were not fastened down and for a full halfminute buildings build-ings on the opposite side pi the street could not be distinguished This coupled with the crashing of trees and the flapping of torn canvas signs was sufficient to fill everybody with fear The French waffle man whose stand Is on the north side of the Dooly block played In hard luqk The wind picked up his plant turned It over rapIdly rap-Idly a few times and then Jammed It down with the bottom side up It also took the lid from a lard cant and when last seen the tin covering was rolling east on Second South street at the rate of about fOrty miles an hour UTAH RECORD BROKEN For five minutes during the height of the storm the wind maintained a velocity ve-locity of sixtyfour miles nn hour and one mile was blown at the rate of seventy sev-enty miles an hour This breaks all records In Utah Only twice In twenty seven years has the wind reached a velocity of sixty miles an hour The first occasion was on April 6 1893 dur ind the dedication of the Temple and the second was on February G 1900 Last evenings storm was from the northwest and its pathway was about two miles in width DAMAGE AT RACE ERACK At the race track at Agricultural park several stables were demolished anda horse slightly injured Trees were also uprooted in the northwestern part of the city and In the path of the storm from the Warm Springs south as far as Fourth South street broken limbs of trees were seen In great profusion The velocity of the wind was high at the Warm Springs and also at the Salt Palace and ML Olivet cemetery but the main storm centered between those points running in a southeasterly direction di-rection nfid spent Its fury before reaching reach-ing the east bench I |
