Show METHSTS HAVEROW Professor in Wesleyan University Uni-versity Too Liberal HE IS LEFT OUT OF FACULTY Cause of Dismissal Is What Is Known Among the Methodist Clergy as Higher Criticism of the i Bible a Mild Bhrase for Heresy His Dismissal Has Excited tho Students and They Demand an Explanation Ex-planation From the Trustees Sev I oral Other Professors Likely to Go j I i it t Sallna Ran June CTlie trustees ot the Kansas Weslpyan university have refuted to reelect Prof P D I Tubba to the chair of natural science which he has held for the past twO years The cause of dismissal is what Is known among the Methodist clergy as higher criticism of the Bible a mild phrase for heresy No formal charges are preferred against Dr Tubbs The trustees simply left him out In making up their faculty for the J coming year It is said he has been holding private classes at his home on higher criticism The students are circulating a petition of remonstrance against Div Tubbss removal Following the close of the college commencement exercises George A Parrlll a member of the graduating class asked the audience to remain The students were intensely excited and In the meeting which followed a number of them nearly all theological students some of whom arc now filling pulpits made fiery speeches demanding demand-Ing that the board of trustees explain publicly why Dr Tubbs had not been reelected None of the board responded to the demands and Rev D W Schermer horn of Lincoln an alumnus the university attempted to pour oil on the troubled waters by suggesting that the board probably had good reasons rea-sons for Its action The students refused to be appeased and Insisted on their demands Dr McGurk also made an Impassioned speech In defense of Tubbs Dr L O Hansell a trustee at length explained that Dr Tubbss case wag In the hands of the executive com mltteo and a committee of the students stu-dents decided to present their demands to that committee Closely associated with Dr Tubbs Is lucy Daniel McGurk pastor of the Methodist church at Jewell City Rev McGurk finished a course at the Kansas Kan-sas Wesleyan then went to the Methodist Meth-odist Theological school at Evanston Ill and finally landed In Argentine where he and Rev Tubbs worked together to-gether as missionaries The two agreed in thpology and were sent home together McGurk was yesterday given the degree of doctor of divinity by his alma mater but he was opposed op-posed by part of the same element that dismissed Dr Tubbs The trouble with Dr Tubbs said Dr McGurk today Is that he is An evolutionist and he lo simply teaching the same things that are taught in the Northwestern university and the principal prin-cipal Methodist theological schools Thc e are a lot of old fogies among the ministers of this conterence who want lo deny the right of a man to think for himself For my part I propose pro-pose to think for myself and say what I think They have been after me the same as they have been after Dr frubbs and I propose to leave this con tfcrence If I cant get a transfer to suit me I will go on the lecture platform plat-form The Rev II G Amhursl of Concordla holds the same views as Tubbs and myself and I am surprised that they have not been after him also I |
