Show PLANS FOR WATERSHED ii j E Dooly Outlines Purpose of Government HIS WORK AT WASHINGTON Interior Department Will Send an Inspector to Examine and Report Upon the Lands It Is Proposed to Reserve When His Report Is Submitted Sub-mitted the Watershed Area Will Be Declared a Forest Reserve Government Gov-ernment Rangers Will Patrol the Reserve John E Dooly returned yesterday morning from Washington City His mission to the capital was as a representative repre-sentative of Salt Lake City to secure the withdrawal from the market of all public lands contiguous to the streams which supply the city with water Mr Dooly says that he had a very pleasant trip When the matter was introduced to Secretry Hitchcock he appeared to realise the importance of granting the prayer of the city and immediately referred re-ferred the matter to Commissioner Hermann Her-mann said Mr Dooly After the matter mat-ter was examined and I had explained to them that the city had purchased the sections Included In the Union Pacific grant It was decided that tile lands on City creek be immediately withdrawn and the commissioner so telegraphed the register and receiver They also withdrew the lands affecting the other watersheds in accordance with the prayers of the city of which the register reg-ister and receiver have been advised The department will immediately send an Inspector to examine and report re-port upon the lands wlthdiawn After his report Is submitted the area will be declared a forest reserve In addition to obtaining all the I land the city desires de-sires the Government will furnish one or two forest rangers to protect the forest reserve from trespass and anton an-ton destruction of timber t The rangers will cooperate with the State Game Warden In the protection of fish and game No action by Congress Is required re-quired All that the city now desires will be accomplished by the action of the Secretary of the Interior and the Commissioner of the General Land office of-fice Too much praise cannot be given to Secretary ITitchcoelc and Commissioner Herman for the interest manifested In behalf of the city and their thorough appreciation of the value of the proposition propo-sition Commissioner Hermann having spent a few days in the city last summer sum-mer was thoroughly posted and afforded af-forded me all the assistance required Speaking of politics Mr Dooly said Utah is congratulated on all sides for her return to the Republican column All arc satisfied that she is there to stay Business throughout the East is excellent Mr Dooly said that he was In the Northwestern depot at Chicago ten minutes after the explosion The place was then lighted by candles and the trains pulled out threequarters of an hour late The destruction he said was terrific and half of the facts were not published The explosion demonstrated demon-strated conclusively that all high pressure pres-sure boilers should be removed as far as possible from buildings occupied by large numbers of people |
