Show LOST HIS DIAMOND STUD > W S HENDERSON TOUCHED AT THE CARNIVAL Suspect Was Arrested but Stolen Property Waa Not Found Supposed Sup-posed Pal Impersonated Officer That there arc thieves operating among the carnival crowds was proven J conclusively last night when a valuable I valua-ble diamond stud was torn from the i shirt front of W S Henderson the j wellknbwn merchant The theft occurred oc-curred at a late hour Jn the German I village Mr Henderson was Jostled about by three welldresaed men until h suspected that they were bent upon picking his pockets and placed his hand tightly over his watch pocket When the trio passed away a small boy named George Parkinson nudged him pointed suggestively to his shirt front I and then to one of the three men The merchant at once discovered tho loss fhl9 diamond l stud seized the fellow pointed out by the boy and called for police assistance The largest of the three men then Stepped up to Mr Hen I demon and stated that he was an officer of-ficer but before he could set charge of the H captive Sergt John Burbldge and Oflipers Gillespie and Burt arrived on the scene and took the prisoner In tow The feliv who had Impersonated an officer quickly disappeared and the police believe that he was a party to the theft Young Parkinson who witnessed wit-nessed the theft told the officers that the prisoner passed the diamond to one 1 of the others when he was seized by Mr Henderson When taken to the police station the suspect was found to be F J Howard a switchman or at least he gave that j name and It appeared on all his effects A close search of Ills clothing was I made but the missing diamond was not found However from his pockets were taken two articles which are looked upon as evidences of his guilt namely ct catalogue of all the fairs to be held during the present year and a checkered check-ered cap It Is thought that he kept the cap In readiness to be donned In the event he became too closely pressed by vigilant officers In fact the police regard him as one bf a gang of professional profes-sional diamond robbers and believe that his arrest was not effected any too soon He was locked up In the city Jail last night pending further Investigation Investi-gation Shortly after midnight a second sun pect was pointed out to Officer Slmp lion by the Parkinson boy who said that he was positive that the fellow was one of those who was with Hoard Ho-ard at the time the diamond was sto len The suspect was taken to the po lice station where he was identified later by Mr Henderson as one of the trio who had Lrowded about him at the time of the theft The prisoner denied his guilt In strong terms but refused to tell where his room in the city Is located and the police consider that fact as pointing to his guilt He gave his name as Andrew Jackson and was locked up |
