Show CORBIN IS HOME II I I AdjutantGeneral Talks of Affairs in I I I t Islands Washington Sept 25 MaJGen Corbln the AdjutantGeneral of the army returned from the Philippines today to-day While he declined to submit to a formal Interview he talks freely of the condition of affairs In the Philippines Philip-pines particularly of the work accomplished accom-plished by Gens Sternberff Weston and Greeljv The General Is greatly pleased with conditions there and was particularly gratified to find the health of the army caUfec for himself evidence so excellent and to see dence of the good feeling among the officers and soldiers Large economies I have been effected In nearly every branch of the military service In the Philippines Gen Weston consolidated the depots I ofhis department thereby relieving a number ofstnf officers with consequent conse-quent saving In money Gen Sternberg reduced the number of hospitals and constructed the medical supply depots through the archipelago leaving but one of three In Manila On his return the hospital at Nagasaki was abandoned aban-doned as also was the hospital ship doneC Relief which had become no longer needed The ship was turned over to Gen Chaffee for the InterIsland trans portatlon department Gen Ludlngton QuartermasterGen eral had not completed his work when Gen Corbln left He Is confronted with pioblcms of greater Importance than those of the others The troops In Luzon for Instance are almost entirely entire-ly quartered In conventoes of church property J and now that quiet and order are restored these are needed for church and school purposes I will be dlmcult for the troops to be quartered as before until barracks are erected and this Important question will be thoroughly Investigated I by Gen Lu dlngton and 0 competent scheme pie pared Gen Corbln said that the necessity for a regularly established mall service II between Manila and this country Is I one be great Importance not only for the cpmmeiial interests but for the soldiers sol-diers and ollicers serving In the archl I pelngo for there Is now no certainty when mall will be received from home The practicability of establishing an efficient mull service Is Illustrated by the facilities offerpd by the Canadian I Pacific steamers carrying mal to the I Orient where the people of the ports In China and Japan where tho steam I crs touch can determine within an hour I the date of the arrival of the next mal and so strict Is the penalty for failure to clclher the mal on schedule time that the people can depend on their mail with the exactness of the service In Washington I Is understood the Postofflce department de-partment Is doing all In Its power to accomplish this and the local postof flee In Manila Is reported as being ndmlnlsteret excellently but the report re-port of the malls Is very Irr Suarf |
