Show DIAZ In the excitement of election and the meeting of Congress people have permitted per-mitted the inauguration of President I Dia of Mexico to pass almost unnoticed unno-ticed but he was Inaugurated a week I ago with imposing ceremonies It is his sixth term as President When the great men of this age are talked about t I Porfirio Diaz ought to he placed up close to the head He is about the most sagacious man of his age In his youth he was a fighter from I away back although he was educated as a priest I He won many victories He was a few times defeated but In defeat victory his soul was selfcontained When first elected President of Mexico in 1870 he had nothing but a wreck to work upon His country had been torn by revolution for fifty years Its treasury was empty it was heavily in debt Only a little fraction of the people was educated There were no public Im provementstfyejc were no fixed industries indus-tries Surely there never was a man who assumed the quasi 1 sovereignty of a country under greater discouragements discourage-ments But he went to work He Introduced In-troduced railroads and agreed to pay a bounty for every mile built He started start-ed up Industry after Industry He convinced con-vinced the brigands that infested the mountains of Mexico that it would be better to serve him as soldiers than to pursue their calling but the persuasive argument that finally made them yield was that If they did not accept his offer of-fer lie would see that the last one of them was exterminated He kept his country on an even keel He raised the revenues necessary to meet the expenses ex-penses which ho had voluntarily assume as-sume Today thejc Is peace over all the republic A wonderful prosperity Is changing the very face oU that ic public It has good railroad facilities the treasury Is I filled t with money and the only cloud on the sky of Mexico Is that old age Is stealing over Diaz and In the course of nature he must before be-fore many years gle up his work Will there be any one to pick up his mantle and wear It I |
