Show I TALKS ON NATURAL HISTORY PROFS JONES AND HOWARD LECTURE AT UNIVERSITY Natural History Society Members Listen to Entertaining Papers New Officers Elected I j I A meeting and election of ofliccrs of I I the Natural History society was held I at the University yesterday nttei imoii Two Interesting papers were read ono by Prof Marcus E Jones president of the society and one by Prof Orson Howard Prof Jones chose for his subject The Factors of Climatic and Geographical I Distribution I I of LIfe His paper was an Intensely Interesting one dealing with the relative productiveness produc-tiveness of the soil In different climes and the t principal I factors of distribution of plant life It I explained what life has to contend with In the different ones and I the elTect of climate upon vegetation Also the relative utility of wind streams and rivers and of animals ani-mals as a means of distributing species The chief faetois of distribution were enumerated as varying humidity and temperature assisted by wind movement move-ment and animals The changes In flora were also carefully and minutely described Prof Howard in I his pujer dealt I with the cultivation of native wild lower He explained the results of expeil mcnls which he had made on plums also the effects of shade Irrigation and soil The paper was highly Instructive und well delivered The election of officers resulted in the reinslnllmont of President Marcus E Jones Susan B Stokes was chosen secretary Prof Howard treasurer I and these ofllcers In conjunction with Prof Llntord and Isaac DIehl were named to constitute the executive committee |
