Show SECRETARY HEATH HERE Finds Encouraging Outlook in the West REPUBLICANS SURE TO WIN Secretary of the National Republican Committee Has Become Convinced I that McKInley Will Carry Utah Ho Points Out a Few Reasons Why This State Should Vote the Republican Re-publican Ticket Its Interests Are Joined to the Republican Cnuse Conditions in the East Hon Perry S Heath secretary I of the national Republican committee arrived In Salt Lake yesterday to spend aev oril days In Utah With Mr Heath wr R C Kcicns member of the national na-tional committee from Missouri and his son K C Kerens Jr of Sl Louis Hugh McGowan of Kansas City andS and-S A Bcmus of SL Louis Mr Heath who resigned the position of Ilrst Assistant PostmasterGeneral I I I V4 I II I 4 II I I i I 1 l I S Perry S Heath Secretary of National Republican Committee j I to accept the post of secretary of the national committee at the request of I party leaders is lapldly forging to the I front as one of the foremost members I of his party In the country Mr Heath I was for many years n newspaper mann man-n a good one His position as secretary secre-tary of the national committee together with his thorough knowledge of political politi-cal affairs In the country give Mr Heaths remarks about the political situation sit-uation unusual weight In addition to this there arC elY few men In the j country who arc closer to President McKinley and Senator Hanna than Mr J Heath Consequently Mr Heaths opinions which he bases upon well establIshed facts and sound reasoning are entitled to the utmost consideration considera-tion enltc course of a running talk about political matters at the Alta club last night Mi Heath said WEST WILL GO REPUBLICAN I I will bo the greatest kind of t surprise sur-prise If this Western country does not Iso I-so Republican this election I tell you frankly we camp out here looking to find something like a slump In our favor fa-vor We rather thought It would consist con-sist largely of politicians but to our surprise we find that the best men of the country arc among those who have come over to us We noticed this great change as we proceeded westward and our wonder grew apace We look frequent fre-quent straw ballots as we traveled and the I result was more than gratifying to us Indicating a change of sentiment that scarcely seemed possible in J89C The lust ballot we took on the last stretch Into Ogclon and we found the conditions In Utah similar to those In the other Western Stales through which we pnsned At Ogden we got oft the train as we hadto wait time quite a while and we mingled with the crowd talking the political situation over with them We found that our hopes for this sectionpromised to be more than realized Judging from what wc heard And since coming here we have heard much that confirms thin You know a stranger coming into a place can sometimes gauge things more accurately than one who la a resident there and so I think from what we have hoard since coming to Utah that we stand an excellent chunco of carry ing this State Frankly I should not bo surprised if we carried it by a majority ma-jority of from 5000 to 8000 This sounds a little big after we consider the great majority of ISflC but 1 believe from what we have learned here that It Is not very improbable The national committee wan not fully aware or thereat the-reat change in sentiment here although al-though we knew that there had been a change WILL AID UTAHS INTERESTS I find that the people of the West are not talking finance this year Thoy are giving more of their attention to protection and the question of commercial I com-mercial expansion and right In this con necClon it seems to mo that the people of Utah are as much Interested In the question of protection and exports as I those who live on the seacoast With the completion of thin new line to Los Angeles you will have n direct line to the seaboard I i understand it Is the Intention to put In independent lines of steamers from Los Angeles to Hawaii and the Orient This would open a now market for the products of Utah and it I Is not too much to assume that there could b established hore great enterprises enter-prises formerly regarded Impracticable I I but now about to be made possible through the now market in the far East I 1 and the quicker communication with I the coast For Instance It is feasible I to erect here a great packing plant to I can the beef of your ranges here and ship It abroad This In only 1 sample of the Industries which may be fostered and developed here through the new conditions and adequate protection Tho miners of Utah are talking protection now more than free silver It is almost impossible to get up an argument on the financial question so we may aa well pax that Protection for lead wool etc and the opening of the now I market through an expansion policy the which l the arc things appeal to pco I pie of the West this year and it Is fully ful-ly I as vital to Ilahs Interests as to those o the Pacific coast States THE NATIONALOUTLOOK As to the pplltlcal outlook nationally It is as you say merely l a question of how large President McKlnleys majority ma-jority will be The Democrats are losing los-ing ground steadily They concede us Kansas both the Dakotas and they are beginning to be doubtful about Nebraska Nebras-ka So strong Is the feeling that Bryan will not carry Nebraska that the party leaders there Bryans own closest him Sen friends are talking of making ator They say Well we will not be able to elect him to tho Presidency bu the t-he will be the next Senator from Ne braska1 This Indicate that his own closest friends have given up the hope of electing him They are making n big bluff about carrying Maryland They believe that Gorman will help them desiring de-siring to be again In the Senate I they carry Maryland Wellington If I he has gone oer to them will claim much of the credit and as he and Gorman Gor-man will be o the same political faith it will be seen that Wellington will not surrender his scat in favor of Gorman sUrenlel so I think they need not expect much from Gorman at least through that motive mot THE NEW YORK SITUATION Thev are also making a great talk about the woik that Is being done In New York They point to the apparent harmony that now exists between Cro Ret and 11111 and the various conflictIng conflict-Ing elements in the New York Democracy Democ-racy They say that Croker has raised a fund of 3000000 to throw Into Now York having levied assessments on all the saloons gamblinghouses houses of Illfame etc to secure the amount Well granting that they carry the city The largest majority ever given In New York city and the sunounding i counties was 80000 I they get that I i they cannot win for we will come down through the State there with a mal ma-l jority anywhere from 125000 to 150000 and will more than wipe out any majority ma-jority they can roll up In the city Bryan himself is talking glittering generalities and cannot be made to come down to facts I asked for figures fig-ures he evades the question by slating that ho Is I only discussing principles He is sick of the question 0 socalled Imperialism Im-perialism There was nothing tolt at the start and Bryan Is realising the I folly of talking of It In n conersa tion t week ago today he said I am dropping Imperialism What then I was asked are you talking I talk Imperialism only in such Stalcs7as Indiana In-diana Ohio and the East west of the L Mississippi I shall talk trusts So you can see what has become of the paramount mount Issue of tho Kansas City convention conven-tion when even the leader of the party Is dropping it On the ClW31 ion of militarIsm there Is no footing for Bryan Bry-an To show that what may properly be called militarism exists In this country coun-try Bryan must show that vc have a larger percentage of soldiers than European Eu-ropean countries Well Germany his thirtyseven soldiers to every 1000 inhabitants in-habitants France over twenty and England almost that much vhlla hero we have less than one man toely 10CO in fact but eighttenths of I mxn So that argument falls ilal On the financial question he has less chiiue than before The prosperity Is here and cannot be explained away by Democratic Dem-ocratic oratory T only see one possible chance for the Democrats to win and that will be to stir up home gieat calamity ca-lamity or other such as the anthracite strike now on In Pennsylvania or the f Homestead strike und make it general throughout the country Ifthey can instigate something like that they nny scratch through but It Ja the uly chance I see for them OUGHT TO WIN IN UTAU Referring again to the situation here which seems so encouraging I cannot help repeating that wo bought to win and will be surprised If we do not I only takes a gain of loa than 2500 to change the result of that special elf lion held here last spring That election elec-tion however was I think more of a personal nature than ordinary elections Our trip here is merely ior the purpose pose of lOoking the siLucubn over for the committee BO that we may be fully advised of the conditions existing here We shall remain for acveial days at least until the end of the week before starting home Yes we shall be here when Roosevelt comes I tell you say what they may Roosevelt Is 0 votegetter He has u great hold upon the people IB a man ot the moat magnetic type and baa iiIsIar yi ce the common He has proved > nd will prove a tower of strength lo the ticket They toll me hero tonight Mr lath concluded with a smile that I must take part in a parade on horseback when he arrives I am willing to undertake un-dertake anything from riding in u barouche to tackling a bucking broncho so that the parade may b u success Wo are out hero to help thing along and will do anything that Is I requested WILL SHOOT DUCKS TODAY Mr Heath and a party of friends will put In the time between Uite morn Ing and Thursday in duck hunting A congenial part was made up last night and will leave In the special car which brought the visitors to Utan for a trip to the duck hootlng raunds near l Corinne The special ear will bo attached tached to the C1G northbound train At I I Brigham City the car will be left and I the party will drive to Corlnne from there In addition to air Heath the party vli > comprise Gov L Tfiomatf 1 A L Thomas Jt R C Kerens rand r-and Tom Pitt of CorInne Thoy will return Thursday evening and Mr Heath left Instructions last night to have a capacious wagon In waiting at the station when the car pulled in she s-he expottrd to havi sp imens of everything every-thing from antelope to snipe to exhibit i on his return |
