Show FURTHER SAYINGS OF CHRIST There has been a general understanding under-standing based on Luke i 1 and John xxi I 25 and on tradition that all the sayings of Jesus Christ are1 not recorded re-corded In the Gospels Many sayings not so recorded have been put forth from the earliest times being quoted by the fathers of the church In their writings and as we learn l from Paplas these were much sought for as the living liv-ing word they were preferred to the written scrolls A collection of these rescued sayings has been made by Dr Edwin Preu chen who after a thorough thor-ough sifting has reduced the number which can thus with any degree of probability be traced to Jesus to twentyone Few of these have any striking quality and many are paraphrases para-phrases or repetitions in slightly altered al-tered form of the sayings recorded In the gospels Dr Preusschens clear grain sifted from the chaff arc taken from ancient writings and commentaries commen-taries and are as follows as we find them In the New York Independent 1 1 Therefore says the Lord Whoso ever Is I near to me Is near to a fire who soever Is far from mols tar from tho Kingdom of God t lie predicted this to us when ho said The weak Is saved by the strong 3 Therefore says the Savior Savo thyself thee and thy soil 4 1 For the Lord generously reveals In his words Preserve my mystery for mo nnd for tho sons of the would was Ut Ijond when tho Lord Lwould como at once t 1 Into His Kingdom and that wha was written was not for future generations but for present warning we can the more readily believe that these sayings are for the most part paraphrases of what has all along been In the gospels When we add that there seems nothing noth-ing essential In them the conclusion must be that they were left out of the gospels because they would add nothing noth-ing to the record Besides the above reputed sayings there are seven Logla of Jesus found in tho Oxyrhyncus papyri by Grenfell and Hunt as follows 1 And pee carctully that thou remove the mote that Is In thy brothers eye 2 Tenus said If ye do not fast In reference to the world yc shall not unter Into tho kingdom of God und If yo do not rest on the Sabbath day je shall not sco the Father 1 1 Jesus said I toll In the midst of the world and 1 appeared to them in he I j llcsh and found them nIl drunken and found none among them who were thirsty And my soul Is perplexed J fjn ecrnlng1 the clilldion of men because they ore blind In their hearts and do not look at their poverty I Jesus said Wherever therearc people peo-ple there 1nm with him Lift up tho stone you will find me there split tho wood nnd 1 am there 5 Jesus said No prophet Is welcome In his own country and no physician tries to e feet cures among his own acquaintances ac-quaintances C Jesus said A city that is built on a high hill and Is fortllled can neither foil nor be hidden 7 Jesus said Thou nearest Tho third saying of this series Is filled out conjecturally the last Is almost al-most wholly lost But though these seven sayings are generally accepted I by scholars as genuine it is difficult to attach much importance to them l or to see that they add materially to the sayings of the Lord as recorded In the gospels It may be as explorers believe that many more papyri will be found in Egypt containing similar logla or sayings but unless they are of a different character from those al read found and collated they will not startle the world I |
