Show VETERAN MINER DEAD Long and Active Life of J J Hayes Cook Ended I I HALF CENTURY IN THE WEST Ono of the Pioneer Mining Men of Southern Utah Passes Away atl Holy Cross Hospital Ho Vas the Original Locator of tho 0 K Mine and Long Had Great Confidence in tho Country About I and in Which He Spent His Latter Yoaru i Was Widely Popular j J Hayes Cook of Alljford I pioneer mining man or southern Utah died nt the Holy Cross hospital yesterday at the advanced age of 7S years Mr Cook had been In close touch with the development of the Pacific coast and the Intermountain country for over half a century He sailed around the Horn In 1849 from New Yorlc his native I Slate to California and his home has since ben In time great West In tha early fifties he crossed the plains driving driv-ing from Illinois the first string of thoroughbred horses taken to California Califor-nia For twenty years ho was Inter I csted in placer mining In that Stale and in breedIng and training horses Over thirty yoara ago he came to Utah bringing with him some of his favOrIte horses and has slnct that time devoted de-voted his attention to the exploration of Beaver and Iron counties and the devolpment of their resources He was tho acknowledged Nester of that region by such oldtimers as Matt Cullen Dennis Ryan A Campbell and Col Henry Allman With all of whom ho was associated more or less In mining projects Hew s the original locator of the O K and Hickory mines and an I enthusiast over the resources of that country the recent development of I 1 which has proved the correctness of his prediction He was I remarkable man those who know him best say of exemplary habits especially popular on account of his civility a most en tertaining conversationalist educated both in books and In the school of experience ex-perience He lived near to nature ho liked to rend tho hills and to be with his favorite animals horses and dogs Mr Cook retained both his physical and mental strength to a wonderful degree I de-gree and was able to visit his numerous numer-ous properties until some four months ago when ho came to Salt Lake returning re-turning only occasionally to Mllford Ho was afiUqtcd with a complication of kidney and other troubles and for two weeks gradually failed Mr Cook was 5 successful miner who made money but spent much of it In searching for more He leaves interests in-terests widely scattered many of I which are of considerable value and expected to Increase A friend who signs himself A T Gin G-in writing of Mr Cook says The kindness he has sown by the wayside and the noble acts so indelibly stamped on his widespread trail will burst forth In bubbling brooks and chant love I songs don the mountain sides The cabin on the hillside will give shelter to another the old anvil will ring as of yore while other brawn Sharpens the steels but the vacancy created In the hearts of his friends needs one so specially spe-cially qualified to fill that we 11 hold the placo open for Hayes i The deceased leaves l two daughter Mrs CZarism Whltehlll of 575 South Second East street and Mrs Harriet Foreman of Portland Or Mrs Fore fi will arrive In the city toddy hayIng hay-ing been summoned on count of her fathers illness I |
